vacuum recommendations

Dyson Animal all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I moved in with my now DH, he had a $1300.00 vacuum. He used my Dyson once and put his in the shed!

I have a Riccar and I've had it for about 7 years and I love it. It's a real workhorse. I bought the model with the metal plate and roller because I'm really hard on vacuums. I like a bag vacuum because those HEPA filters are expensive!

My MIL bought the Orek and raved about it, but when I was helping her out one day and tried to vacuum the living room carpet, it didn't do well at all. It was the worst vacuum ever, no power, no suction - the floor was just as filthy when I was done vacuuming.

I was talking to a vacuum cleaner repairman once and he said Dyson's are all the rage, but it costs about $70 to change the belt!!!

Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Consumer Reports rated the Sears Kenmore Progressive 360 best. It's a the floor canister type. about $300 dollars or so. Better than Dyson and Oreck.

I hate my Dyson animal DC17, it has had issues that I never had with a 50.00 vacuum, it constantly has to be babied to work, maybe I got a dud, I do not even have a house full of carpet only 3 area rugs and the bedrooms. My attachment works half the time and the filters have to be washed way to often to be convenient. I too read all the raves and paid around 575.00 for it and I would not get another at this point.

My mother in law has 5 indoor cats/dogs and she loves her Riccar (I love that it is made in USA) and she still raves about it after 5 years.

Anyone try the shark navigator? I see they compare it with the dyson on tv,but I wanted IRL opinions on it. I had an oreck that lasted only a year in a 1 bedroom apartment with 1 cat.Not impressed. That was in 1998-99. Have had $50 dollar vacuum since then. One I had to replace after the dog chewed the cord.Works ok,but I have so much dust in the home.

i love my sears canister.. it does it all and its 3 yrs old and not a single problem, i have dogs and cats and it sucks up a bag of hair every couple of days.. it was about 400.00 you dont have to change to heads to do hardwood or carpets.. it has a button on the handle for turning the moving head off or on and you raise and lower it with a touch of your foot. it also has a small moving head for stairs. furniture etc

The problem with Consumer Reports is that they only test vacuums for 30 days before they make their reccommendations and that's just not enough time to tell if it's going to be a good vacuum.

I stopped by a vacuum repair shop because I was undecided about a new vacuum and I needed advice. I mentioned that Consumer Reports rated the Hoover Windtunnel as the top-rated vacuum and the repair guy rolled his eyes and showed me where he had 5 of them in the back needing repair. He said CR only tests vacuums for 30 days and that's about how long the Windtunnel lasts. I stopped trusting Consumer Reports after that.

I asked him what kind of vacuum he used in his house and he said a Riccar.

Check craigslist. I was able to get a Dyson and a Sears Progressive, in perfect running condition, for $50 (deal of a lifetime). It's disgustingly amusing to watch all the stuff the Dyson picks up.

Absoulty AVOID the Bissel Healthy Home! I paid close to $300.00 being told its similar to a Dyson.... not even close! I have 3 dogs & a cat.... it clogs so bad my DH has to take it apart to unclog! I've had it 2 yrs and its been nothing but grief! I'm in the market now for a dyson! I think HSN or shop NBC will have them on easy pay plans.....
