Valentine's Day 1st Annual Hatch Along

I will have to keep a close watch on that one as it grows.

Svart Hona? Ohiki? Ayam Cemani? All these breed are new to me. I had to google them just to get an idea what they look like. The Ayam Cemani looks pretty cool, like an all black statue. Do any of these breeds make good backyard flock birds?
ohiki are a longtail bantam breed mainly for ornamental and show purposes. Think of a bantam cochin without feathered legs and a long tail. Similar appearance. They have to be kept in good clean quarters and not turned out to the crowd of layers and mud.

Svart hona are a fibro breed, all black like the Ayam cemani. They're not as gamey looking. The lady I got eggs from said her pullets are just starting to lay and with short days and cold weather in ohio and northern kentucky they lay every 28 to 30 hours. So not to shabby on them.

She kinda reminds me of my Araucana pullet, Storm... OMG, I want some! I think I'm getting Jim won over on Svarts, I was showing him pics last night, and he is into the fibromelanistic factor of them and I think they are the same as the ACs in that aspect??
Have my fingers crossed for ya for pullets... that'll weigh my odds better in trying to talk you outta some eggs, lol...

Svart Hona is way more price friendly...right now the Ayam Cemani market is very shaky...Greenfire farms just dropped their price a couple weeks ago from $2,500 per juvenile pair to $199 for day old chicks..so market hasnt stablized yet. i know there are some people on BYC who sell Ayam Cemani for $20-30 per egg. Svart Hona egg wise go for roughly the same price. i really wanted Ayam Cemani but the more i compare the two breeds i really think i like Svart Hona or Hmong better.

Thanks for the tip @misfitmorgan I'll show that to him.

Umm... Nope...

My avi is Cheeky, my single combed EE that we cannot figure out what he is mixed with, lol... he throws green legged chicks, too... I think he's gorgeous and he has the best temperament for a Roo, protects his girls but allows me to do whatever I need to with them... in fact, if one throws too big of a fit at me, he whacks them with his wing to make them behave...

I'm pretty sure he is a Birchen Iowa Blue Cross..they have willow or blue slate legs...so thats probly where the chicks get it from.
Here is a pic of Birchen Iowa Blue Roo..looks alot like your guy there.

(that Roo is kinda puffed up and squatting down lol...just google image search Birchen Iowa BLue or check the Iowa Blue thread on BYC for more pics of the different patterns.)

Just checking in to tell you that i have....

HOWEVER. Upon gathering eggs from the Black Java pen I found one girl acting SUSPICIOUSLY BROODY. So maybe I'll end up NOT raising these in the house!

These are older pictures. Rosie has filled out quite a bit more with red since this picture was taken.

Rosie looks like a red star, which could be a cross between a rhode island red and a white plymouth rock or a rhode island white. She definitely carries a gene for white feathers. As mentioned before, the chick could feather out darker as it gets older.

I have a question for those of you that have hatched bantams before. Something I just thought about. I am hatching LF and bantams. Do I need to set up a separate brooder for the bantams, since they will be so tiny? There are only 2 of them out of 28. Could the larger chicks possibly crush or step on the littles?
My bantams right now are living in one brooder with 3 EE chicks that are two days older then them. 3 EE and 2 Cochin...soon enough the three EE will move to the top of the brooder away from the heat lamp and the new babies hatching for this HAL will go in with the cochins. i had a horrid thought last night.....i have an old really high power shop vac and i thought that would be really good to clean the brooder of all the spilled feed and shredded paper. The mental image i got was "OMG i sucked up a chick!!" obviously i would move them first but how horrid would that be, no way the chick would survive.

Not raising them in the house is always better....alas here it is -10 tonight so no chicks outside for sure.

Thanks for the breed ID I have been wondering about her. This chick is definitely a keeper. I want to see what it looks all grown up.

Wow! I do think you're right! About a 1/3 of his daughters came out with a penciled pattern look and I couldn't figure it out, but I found pics matching their patterns exactly... hmmm... well, he came out of a blue egg, beard and muffs, and his legs are bright yellow... So Am and whatever made his legs yellow... Awesome! Thanx! :D
