I can kinda see thru my fingers, my ear, nose, and cheek. Not my hand tho. Not that I've been playing with it or anything.

My boyfriend has a projector for microfish. I'll go play with it and see how bright it is. I hadn't planned on tossing any yet. Was just a little disapointed that I couldn't see anything.

I posted this on the Feb Hatching page also, but thought you guys might like to see what I got this AM.

Day 4 in the bator

I opened the incubator last night and was overcome with stink! So I candled all of the chicken eggs and all are still dancing, so they are good. Then I did the "smell test" on the quail eggs. Found it! I then decided to try to candle the older quail eggs (today is day 7). Because this is my first time with quail, I decided to open the bright eggs to see how accurate my culling is. (I always want to learn, so the only way I can think to figure out if I've done a good job is to crack the eggs open. That way the egg is not wasted, it was a lesson!). Of the six eggs that I culled, only one had any development, and the development was minimal, looking like it quit at the blood ring stage. There were no veins, no visible growth. I did not open the stinky egg.

eeeew, i've had the stinky egg happen too and the smell was not nice in the house. i had the dh take it out side to dispose of it. i was gagging as he was giggling (till he got a good whiff!

Ok, so I'm pretty eggcited! I wasn't so sure about candling. Because all I thought I was seeing was the yolk. So, when I was collecting eggs lastnight from the coops. I candled one of those and guess what! There was nothing in them. You can't see the yolk. So the dark masses I was seeing in my incubated eggs weren't yolks. They were fertilized eggs!!!!

I tried to take a pic to post but they just weren't coming out very well.

Ok, I just posted a question on quail page.

i need help....

I am using a brand new hova bator 2362N with the fan circulation and also got 1610 egg turner.

Ok, I have only used someone elses hova bator before and just used the thermometer that came with it.

So, I'm trying to do it right this time. I have the one that came with it and I bought a thermo/hygrometer (or whatever). I put water where hova bator tells you to put
water.

Here's the question!!!

The thermometer that is sitting on the eggs is hovering just a smiggin under 100.
But the digital one. I ran the sensor down through one of the plug holes on the top. So it is just a little bit over the top of the eggs.
The humidity has not gotten over 40%, but currently 29%. And the temp on the digital one fluctuates SO much. right now it is 99.9, but when i started to type this it was at 97.9.

Is that normal for the digital temp to fluctuate so much?

And What do I do about the humidity?????? Add more water till it gets to 50%. I read some where the other day that a quail person had a better "dry hatch" at 35%.

Help me please. This is my first to attempt quail hatching and my other hatches haven't been that great with chickens either.

where in the house is the incubator at? i currently have mine in the basement since that is the place least likely to have a temp fluctuation. also, you really want to do the temp at the level of the eggs and not above them. those little cheapo thermometers usually are off on their temp so i haven't bothered to use them in the incubator- i use them in the brooder box. i use the digital with the hygrometer. i used to use one that had a remote sensor but i have to get a new sensor.
