Valetine Hermit Crabs!!

I bought a couple crabs for my wife when we were dating and on a trip to Key West, Fl because she thought they were cute. Needless to say, walking down the street (about a 20 minute walk from where we were staying to the farthest part of the island) with the 2 crabs in a little plastic container, Key West being Key West, some dunk guy come walking alone, see's the crabs, walks up to us, and says "Better to have yer crabs in a box than in yer sn*tch!" then turns and walks right by without another word. Only in Key West can you get a reference like that after not even 5 minutes out of the store with a couple hermit crabs.

Got back to where we were saying and cracked up telling the people we were staying with. Thats one of my most favorite memories now. lmao

Oh gosh....I was so lost when that guy said that to us. He had to tell me what the guy meant

I use to have hermit crabs. I loved most of the ones I had. Even the one that pinched inbetween my fingers and wouldn't let go. Learned to not carry them around bare handed. Luckily it was its small pincher. My first 2 actually stayed alive for 3 years. I don't know how cause I didn't have internet and the place I bought them from just only had a small booklet with improper care other than have a sponge in their water dish and mist the tank during molting. More less one of those places that treat them like throw away pets. I had them in a 10 gal. glass tank with cleaned aquarium gravel in the bottom and a wooden branch that we heated in the oven to kill anything on it. I took them out almost every day to play and one day the largest one climbed out of the tank some how. I looked all over and didn't find it till the next day. It made its way from out of the tank, must of dropped down to the table, dropped down to the floor (1.5' tall), and walked through 3 rooms while avoiding the dogs. I found it behind my parents' bedroom door that leads outside. My mom was grossed out from the thought of it in her room incase it would have climbed up her blankets into the bed. About 4 years ago my husband (BF at the time) bought me some more. One of them for some reason sat on the water dish corner and wouldn't let go of the edge for a couple of days and then finally moved but just clasped into the dish and died right in front of me. I couldn't believe what I had seen and how fast the rotten egg smell started. We then bought another one for company and it molted and the other crab was aggressive and very active. I divided the tank and it managed to get through and eat the poor other crab alive. Rarely ever held that crab cause it tried to pinch all the time and wouldn't stay still. It tore apart a thick plastic plant I had from climbing on it day and night. Must of had some form of crab ADHD along with aggressive problems. I still kept my shells just incase I ever get anymore. I'd love to have a strawberry one.

I got remembering one day my dad heated up some pork rines and was eating them and the hermit crabs went nuts and were trying to walk into the glass to get to him with their feelers moving a bunch. He wouldn't share them a bite though. Probably not good for them but they wanted them so bad.
