My idiot neighbor's German Shepherd killed my 3 yr. old big Toulouse gander a few weeks ago. We've already been in court for the past five years, so I'm just adding this to the fray.

Can anyone give me an idea of what I should ask the judge for in compensation for him? He was a pet (LaTrec), and I caught their dog in my backyard in the act. My China White gander, his constant companion, is bereft. I am in central Calif.

thanks

On the open market? Not much.

Under your circumstances, for that purpose, I would request the price of purchase as a gosling plus the cost of feed, etc to grow him to his current age -- basically your immediate costs to get the gander as he was the day he died. There's a chance your request for reimbursement of costs will be thrown out, but it doesn't hurt to request it in addition to the purchase price of a replacement.

Oh really? I've been to a few auctions and they go for more than "not much".

A new one from Mcmurray is $11. Now to raise it to the age of three is not cheap. Check around see what you can find out on CL. Check cities in your state. My guess is $30 easy or more. You can ask what you want the judge may bring it down a bit so go high.
Toulouse is not a common duck!

I did a quick check for one around our state and found none. Not one single goose or gander but a couple looking for one or the other. Your likely going to have to raise one to age and that won't be cheap since your likely not going to be able to order just one. I would ask for enough $$$ to order enough goslings so you can get a new one. If that's 5 then ask for enough to order 5. Ask for enough $$$ to order your minimum in goslings so you can replace him.

Make sure you explain this to the judge and show him a catalog if you must. Be prepared. This is not the first time the dog has done this?

Hope it works out.

He was a regular Toulouse, nothing fancy. I paid $25 for a pair of goslings from Ideal Poultry. At 3 yrs. old, I'd say a rough guess to feed him to that age would be around $100.

I suspect this same dog played a role in one of my little minature donkeys colic'ing the same week. I lost her. Of course, can't prove that, but I've had trouble with him chasing everyone (geese, donkeys, pygmy goats, horses, all go out and graze together, with the occasional mule deer joining in).

My animals stay on my property inside my fence and behave themselves. The neighbors think they should be able to turn dogs, cattle, whatever loose to trespass anywhere and damage whatever they choose--which is what started the property dispute 5 years ago.

YOU NEED TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM NOW!

It doesn't matter what type of gander it was, you won't easily replace it and that's the point. Explain this to the judge.

If the dog is on your property again it's on you if someone gets killed. You need to end it now. Sorry if that's harsh but it's up to you to keep your animals safe, no matter what you need to do.

Go to a few more and if you're paying attention you'll quickly learn that auction prices are rarely reflective of true open market prices.

To the OP: Why have you not SSS'd yet?

Olive honey- maybe your not much and my not much are two different things.

I still say it's worth more than just a few bucks. When you consider the time and care and feed. It's worth a million to me.

I suggest you go to this link and print out the price list for goslings
http://www.holderreadfarm.com/gosling_price_list_page/gosling_price_list.htm
show this to the judge along with a reasonable estimate of the costs to raise a goose to three years of age. I would have sent you to the adult price list but there are no Toulouse listed there.
When I had my trial it was suggested that I buy replacements at an auction. I nipped that in the bud by showing my actual bill of sale from Holderread's and a copy of my canceled check. The "judge" commented in open court that some people had more money than I did have brains. The judge managed to rule against me because I was the only witness to the dog attack. I locked the dogs in the barn at the time, and called Animal Control. The two that picked up the dogs said at the trial that the bodies were consistent with dog attack but were forced to say that they didn't see the dogs attack. When I left steaming and forced to pay court costs, they explained how SSS worked. (that is Shoot, Shovel and Shut Up) and warned that the dogs would return the first chance they had. They also said the judge was a dog owner.
They were right the dogs returned within two weeks and I chased them off and called their owner to keep them at home. He just laughted at me so I went to the pawn shop. The next time they visited I gave them both 12 gage justice SSS! After a couple of days the owner come looking for them and I told him the direction that I had chased them off in!
Just so you don't think I like dog killing. It happened another time when my neighbors female in heat attacked in company of a stray male. We caught them and I called and told the neighbor where his female was (in the pound) He had kept her confined but his kids let her out to play and she took off. He acted like a neighbor should. Even the male was saved, before his 30 days was up I had contacted the breed rescue group and they bailed him out and found him work 40 miles away. Chasing Canda geese off golf courses where they are real pests. Good luck with the dog and the owner! LOL the autocensor on here changes the proper name for a female dog to grump
