vanilla fly controll

Hummmmm, I wonder how Vanilla Extract, (the stuff used in cooking) would work? Is it the chemicals in the strips / air freshener or is it the Vanilla scent that does it? If it’s the scent I would think Extract would be cheaper than air freshener. But I could be wrong,

Inquiring minds want to know.

I am absolutely going to try this. I was just lamenting how many flies we have now that we have 6 chickens. Is any brand Ok??

We had been using the fly trap bags, but the bait had a horrific odor.

Took oldtimegators advice and tried the vanilla trees----they worked wonderfully.

Now we hang the stinky fly bags about 30 ft away from the coops (so I don't have to smell them) to attract any flies AWAY from the coops, and the vanilla trees IN the coops.

I buy my vanilla trees at WalMart---pack of 6 for a little over $3

I just hung 2 in my chicken run but where they free range there are flis all over ground wherever there is poo. They are all over the dog poo in the yard as well. Do the fresheners need to be protected from the rain or can I hang them in the open? How often do they need replacing?

I don not think the vanilla extract will work because of the sugar they put in it. But a pure natural vanilla might. For a long time I did not think it was working but now I have very few. Just those nasty mosquitoes are visiting and of course the red wasp. Ouch! one got me yesterday and I am still swelling and hurting , I used the ammonia, Then the chiggerex and then the Benadryl. Today it is twice the size and I am taking Benadryl by mouth as well. I hate tose things. Gloria Jean

About two weeks ago I went out and bought the Trees also...They work! I try to spray the run down at least once a day to disburse the poo on the ground and make sure I pick up all the corn cobs up too and the fly population outside is better too.

I can't stand the scent in the fly traps. Rotting meat! GAG!!! Can't wait to run to the Walmart and get some vanilla trees! So glad I found this thread!
