Vaseline removing spurs?

My flocks legs were looking rough, so I slathered them all with vaseline in case it was scaly leg mites. My roo had some pretty pronounced spurs for an 11 month old Barred rock, and I swear, they are getting smaller each time I treat them. It kind of looks like someone is whittling them down - the base is still wide, but the ends are getting narrower and shorter. Is the vaseline doing something to them? It would be great if it was gently and painlessly grooming his spurs - he doesn't mind a foot massage, but I think he'd put up a fuss if I tried to give him a pedicure! Maybe it is softening up the outer layers and they are coming off during the day? He has rough concrete areas as well as yard and trees to play on - any of which might help scrape them off if the vaseline is doing something....
