Vegan diet for chickens - is it unhealthy?

I did a quick search for hormone implants for chickens and it looks to be something that is added by syringe. While technically should be handled by a vet, I could see the average chicken owner being able to handle this.
Still double think. No animal by products for you, but come take your birth control pill....because speciesism.

I mean if you kept a chicken in an enclosed facility like say a large chicken barn, and you fed it Purina Layena crumbles for its whole adult life, the only thing not vegan about it is the oyster shell. And whatever bugs the chicken would stumble across.

One could argue that most chickens in the whole country are probably vegetarian, or close to it. Am I wrong?

I'm not even touching on this specific scenario, nor promoting anything. Just a label reader.

Commercial chicken food might be vegetarian, but that doesn't make chickens vegetarians. Even in a chicken barn the chicken would find bugs to eat. This kind of scenario largely occurs in commercial chicken facilities where the chickens are not raised to live long lives. So while its not an apples to oranges comparison, it's not exactly apples to apples either. The chicken in question is getting fewer nutrients in general than would be found in commercial feed and being deprived of sun light and foraging opportunities to boot.

I wouldn't say there is anything wrong with having chickens eat only commercial feed per se. Sure, chickens that forage and or have access to real plant and animal matter are healthier, but pelleted feed is meant to be an almost complete diet.

On the contrary, just plain "greens" (not entirely sure what that implies) is going to be lacking in several nutrients needed for a healthy bird.

People who have decided to be militant about a viewpoint often hold a range of illogical beliefs, and they may believe that the synthetic amino acids added to commercial feed to make them able to be complete without animal products is bad. They might think that the probiotics included constitute 'animal products'.
There is no arguing with these people because arguing requires a grasp of logic that they do not posses.
This chicken you are asking for help with has already reached past the expected maximum lifespan for her breeding. I feel very sorry for her, and I know you do too. I am not sure what you can do in this situation as it doesn't sound like the owner will be open to suggestions.
