Vegan / vegetarian thread!

EastinChickens,

I've been a vegetarian for about 13 yrs and I'm married to a long time vegan.

I'll agree with the other folks, switching to a vegetarian diet doesn't ensure a healthy diet or weight loss. So, make sure you read up on how to eat vegetarian and to balance your diet (start with Peeps for Ethics, etc.). I do believe that vegans tend to weight less than vegetarians; they can't fall into the high fat, cheese and dairy, trap that vegetarians can. Also, if animal abuse/pain/death is concern of yours, a vegan lifestyle is the way to. Personally, the vegan diet is tough; it limits to making most if not all your food and, then, there's the cheese issue, I love the stuff

Note, to loss weight, you should start an exercise program as well

When I cleaned the cupboards I was first focusing on things with hydrogenated oils, food colorings, and chemicals I could not even pronounce.

I love KEFIR for the gut. I buy the lifeway kefir.DD likes strawberry, but I love the plain.Could drink a few bottles a day if it weren't so expensive.

I also make yogurt by the gallon by letting a pot of milk ferment under towels/coats. It is pretty simple.Just boil some milk.Cool to a warm temp.Add a few scoops of plain yogurt.Cover under blankets.Let sit for 24 hours.

For coffee substitute I would recommend some dandyblend.Tastes good, and dandelion is good for you.I always say I am going to make my own as I have plenty of weeds!

I used to get some nutritional yeast flakes at the HFS that was cheesy tasting.Good on pasta and popcorn.I know there is a way to make it into cheese blocks.

I like bacon too,but we switched to turkey bacon a while ago.Less mess when cooking. Not sure how the soy bacon is. I used to by a lot of soy when dd was younger-cheese,yogurt,hotdogs-all soy.Now we just get some vanilla soy milk or frozen soy beans to snack on.We are soyed out!

For snacking I love wasabi peas and Terra veggie chips.

Right now is a perfect time to get rid of foods and donate to shelters.Kids school is always doing food drives so I pass on items to them.

I add oats to soups.Oat milk is also good for you(easy to make) though the almond milk sold these days has gotten less expensive.

Oh I almost forgot about the veggie burgers I get for dd.We make those with some sweet potato fries.Yum. Just as tasty as a fast food burger and fries.

With my dh being on the road I get about 5 meals into his cooler, but otherwise he is eating on the road.He stocks up at walmarts, but suprisingly they are expensive despite their savings claims.

Haha. The same goes for me. I don't like consuming milk that's not organic or eggs that aren't organic free ranged, but I'm just so grateful for my chickens. I love them and they give me the freshest of eggs. My neighbors always call up and say that they want our eggs. They actually prefer them over store bought eggs!
