EastinChickens,
I've been a vegetarian for about 13 yrs and I'm married to a long time vegan.
I'll agree with the other folks, switching to a vegetarian diet doesn't ensure a healthy diet or weight loss. So, make sure you read up on how to eat vegetarian and to balance your diet (start with Peeps for Ethics, etc.). I do believe that vegans tend to weight less than vegetarians; they can't fall into the high fat, cheese and dairy, trap that vegetarians can. Also, if animal abuse/pain/death is concern of yours, a vegan lifestyle is the way to. Personally, the vegan diet is tough; it limits to making most if not all your food and, then, there's the cheese issue, I love the stuff
Note, to loss weight, you should start an exercise program as well
