Vegans of BYC!!

Pics
My neighbors had a milk cow and when she called they did milk sharing because of how much cows produce, the calf couldn't drink enough, if they didn't milk her it would be very painful for her udders. Fun fact, the mom would keep the high fat cream for her baby, lol. Leslie said she could feel that she was holding her milk back. Animals never cease to amaze me.
Absolutely, this is an example of humane milking. It has to happen in this situation because the cow already has their baby and are producing too much milk. It's for her health.

Personally, I wouldn't want to use it, even in that situatuon. I would simply use the dairy for other animals, or for family.

I do the same thing with my ducks, they honestly produce more eggs than they can eat, so the extras go to my dogs and to family

I'm interested! Who here is vegan/vegetarian, and what motivates you to do so?
What do the vegans here do with their flocks and their eggs?

I'll go first! I have been vegan since last year, due to loving animals and hating how they're treated, ESPECIALLY in commercial farms- my two ducks are where my flock journey is just beginning. It actually all started with incubating store bought eggs!
So!
Dougie, and Sprightly! Dougie is 4 days older, and hatched on Christmas day! She was an assisted hatch, incredibly nerve wracking!!
Her sister, Sprightly is a very sweet girl, they both are.
When they begin laying, I will feed most of the eggs back to them. Im not sure of the best way to do this.
I'll share a photo of my beautiful girls, feel free to join the conversation regardless of your beliefs and choices. Please be kind though! And I would LOVE to see photos of your flock!
About 95% of my meals are vegetarian.
I do eat fish like once a week and organic meat about once a month.

Reasons not wanting to eat meat and diary:
  • Caring for animal welfare. Don’t like the idea that animals get killed for my pleasure.
  • Environment. Factory farming has a huge negative impact on the wold and all it’s species. Pollution, Vanishing of rainforests.
I do drink milk and cheese (organic) and my own eggs. The reason I’m not vegan or 100% vegetarian has to do with liking the taste, ease (social) and my own health. I can’t eat much beans or bean products or my intestines start to protest.

Oh oh you’re asking me why I’m VEGAN, ok. Sorry for the confusion. :p

I’m vegan because I believe from the Bible and Science that it’s much healthier for me.
I’m a bit confused on these reasons. Most people who believe in God and follow the rules of the bible (how it is interpreted ) do eat meat. And often have large factory farms where animals are badly treated.

The Jewish and Muslin people say you shouldn’t eat pig meat because its unhealthy and the Bible/Koran says so. But they don’t forbid cow, sheep and other meat.

Science has not much to do with animal care, exept research as far as a I know.

Again, I'm not vegan for animal cruelty reasons so much as for health reasons.

God allowed certain types of meat to be eaten after the worldwide flood, but that was out of necessity, as Noah and his family didn't really have too much else to eat at first. Eventually eating meat became a much more common practice.

But originally, when the world was perfect, Adam and Eve didn't kill animals for food. They ate plants! And Adam lived over 900 years. Other factors were involved with that, but a healthy diet was one of the major ones.

So the way I look at it is this: If God designed everything perfect in the beginning (which He did) his original health plan for us people is still as good (or perhaps even better) for us than it was all those thousands of years ago. In a perfect world, every animal and person lived on a plant-based diet, and they thrived. God knows that it's the healthiest for us.

So that is the primary reason why I'm vegan. Because it's simply- well-- better.

Well, Im not religious but I used to be so I kinda want to address your point with my understanding.
On the religious note, in the Bible, in the very beginning God gave mankind plants to eat. It was only after the fall of mankind, that we were permitted meat. So we know that eating meat started when mankind sinned. Although meat is allowed, the Bible goes on to make it clear that it is only from animals deemed clean, that blood is forbidden, and that animals should be cared for well.

Although it is allowed under those instructions, we as humanity have ended up farming and breeding animals unethically. We're harming the planet. Poultry are bred to produce way too many eggs, cows are bred to produce way too much milk, etc, for human greed. We genuinely treat them like machines, instead of living feeling beings who ought to be protected. So if we were asking morally, if we are allowed to continue down that line? I would venture a guess that God would be unhappy with it. If there is such a deity.

Now from a health/scientific perspective, we know that many kinds of meat actually cause cancer. Pork is one of the worst ones for that. It can also caude other issues, like high cholesterol. I dont believe meat is all that natural for us to eat, we cant go around eating raw flesh like predatory animals can, we dont even have the teeth for it.
Also know that 60% of people can't properly digest dairy. (I mean, why would we? It's made for calves, not humans)
Now we know that not every plant based diet is healthy, If you eat only junkfood, you'll end up sick. But a plant based diet consisting of the right things, can be far healthier for people than meat or dairy.

I repsect your views, of course. And I dont want to start a religious debate. Thats just my understanding of it

It was all peaceful and perfect in the beginning, it was only after sin that humans (and it was probably the same for other animals) began to crave and desire meat.
I agree with your perspective, if we are built that way, we can surely thrive that way.

I tried making a vegan duck style meal yesterday, which freaks me out a bit because... well, even when I ate meat, I never ate duck, ever. And now I have and very much love my ducks, so trying a duck style vegan meat felt so weird. It was like someone saying "hey, wanna try this vegan dog burger!"

Anyway, I got over myself and went ahead and tried it, and it turned out SO good!!!!
I blended up chickpeas, flour, tahini, beetroot, salt, and water until it formed a thick paste, then I added more flour to form a slightly sticky dough.

Then I sliced it into burger type shapes, and then sliced it lightly on both sides to get a good texture. Then I boiled the thick slices in soy sauce and water for about 15 minutes. Then I took them out, covered in corn starch, and fried lightly until golden...

Then I made a mix of soy sauce, lime juice, diced garlic and chili, maple syrup, and a little of the cooking water. Then covered the slices in this sauce and let them simmer until it had thickened to a glaze.

Then I sliced them up and put them on a bowl of couscous. SO yummy!View attachment 3285455View attachment 3285456
That looks really good :drool

Very true.

Also correct.

You are spot on, my friend. 💯

I agree totally.

I'm sorry, I should have clarified. I am 100% in opposition to factory farming. I hate animal cruelty, it's wrong. We shouldn't be exploiting animals to their own harm just so we can satisfy our selfish human gluttony.
That is a major reason I'm vegan. But that isn't the #1 reason. It's definitely one of them though.
