Sure, should talk about with people if it's welcomed, but I disagree with forcing the topic once someone makes it clear they aren't interested. People are capable of doing their own research, they don't need my lectures.

but seriously, we eat heaps of beans and chickpeas, very versatile. i'll cook up a batch of chickpeas for example and they'll get mashed up into patties, put whole into a curry, cold in a salad, all sorts. we also get bulk cheap tofu, most often is just diced, marinated and fried then put into a stir-fry but again is very versatile. soft tofu makes for a great thick vegan smoothie, blended with fresh fruit and soy milk, a great way to use frozen berries that one. anyone who says tofu is bland and horrid just hasn't has it cooked right imo

every so often we go to one of the many asian food warehouses here that have all sorts of fake meat made from soy and gluten. ranging from fake ham slices, whole chickens, meatballs, chicken wings and nuggets etc etc. but i don't like to do it too often as i don't really like eating such processed foods and kinda don't trust mass produced food from countries without the best quality control systems if you know what i mean. ok for a fun treat every now and then though i figure. the fake chickens even have a head with a comb!

and gluten (wheat protein) is another good one if you're not intolerant to it. can buy gluten flour, mix it to a stiff dough, break into chunks, boil them and then dice/mince or whatever and treat as you would meat in any recipe. or boil in one big piece that's been flattened out, cover in stuffing mix, roll and tie up and roast with a liberal amount of oil and seasoning and make a vegan roast dinner.

i really like the challenge of making vegan alternatives, forces you to be that much more creative sometimes i think. i made a vegan friend a meal a while ago with battered fried chicken wings and ham and pineapple pizza, he didn't quite know what to make of it haha.

Yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with you or giving you advice. I was just adding my thoughts to what you said. Some people can get pushy about it, but I wasn't implying anything about you.

I'm a vegetarian and I never ever tell people what they can't eat, grimace at their food, or do any of that annoying stuff. I'll bring veggie dishes to houses and not ask people to cook anything special for me. My hubby eats meat and I might kid around with him a bit - he can take it.

Now if someone ASKS me about being a vegetarian I'll be happy to enlighten em, but otherwise I try to lead by example, not by proselytizing.

As for good protein sources, I LOVE Quorn. I am sure it will kill me someday but it's yummy.

I'm a "flexitarian", the new word now for someone who is mostly vegetarian, but eats a little meat now and then. I eat less and less meat all the time, I just don't really care for it. Plus, I am starting to really like some of the animals I used to eat a lot of, like chickens and ducks. Eating lots of plants is also good for my reactive hypoglycemia because they have fewer carbs and I can eat more of them. I eat a lot of peanuts and sunflower seeds for my fats and proteins. I do eat eggs, but not a whole lot.

When I was growing up, no one ever questioned me for eating meat or eggs like they do now.

Are you sure you weren't getting enough protein? I never had a problem with that, but I took B vitamins and watched to be sure I got enough iron; these were the challenges for me.

Many years ago I loved a good steak. I've returned to meat eating but can't stand the taste of beef now.

Apparently I am a "pescatarian" as well, for over 30 years (I wasn't even aware of that word until reading this thread!). I usually just say that I'm vegetarian but I eat some fish. Eggs are my main source of animal protein. At least half to two thirds of my meals are vegan. Beans and peas with grains provide good protein and there is always tofu. I don't miss meat, but, for some reason, still like the smell of bacon so will buy soy based fake bacon some times
