Vegetarian chickens...What?!

Quote:
Most people don't even have a clue where their food comes from anymore. They hear about farms and think, "how quaint", but never pause to think about the fact that the food they buy in the store was grown by a farmer somewhere. I've even heard someone say "I'd never drink milk from a cow, I only drink milk from the store."

I know. It still makes me sick though.

Just found this "The Federal Govt. forbids PROTEIN PRODUCTS OF RUMINANTS (cow, sheep, goat) to be included in chicken feeds (not ALL animal byproducts)[title 21 CFR589.2000]". I haven't verified it though. Doesn't say anything about porcine.

Hey, you can't tell me that all bologna and hot dogs are 100% cow/pig. But if Tyson and ConAgra don't have to put "fingernails" "rat" "cockroach" or "soylent green" on their ingredient lists, then seems like "vegetarian fed" is fair enough, as far as truthiness in labeling goes.

Seriously, I am sure there are some...few...meat processors out there...somewhere...who run clean facilities and only use the finest cuts of named ruminant in their products, and whose secret herbs and spices really are similar to pepper, cayenne and various types of greenery. I'm just saying, they are rare and precious things, and the vast majority of Factory Meat is produced by companies that have HACCP violations on an hourly basis.

* I know how easily confused I am, but, doesn't vegetarianism preclude the eating of eggs anyway-- or just fertilized eggs?? Eggs don't have a "face" but. . . . . ~

Vegans can not eat eggs, vegetarians can.

I havent really read every post so far but most chicken foods out there now have had the animal protein taken out of it. They are made of strictly plant protein and soy. I have not seen a regular chicken food, any brand, for a long time with any animal protein in it. Now, all the gamebird foods contain animal protein. Check the tag on the bottom of the bags and it will tell you whether it is plant or animal protein. Purina took the animal protein out of their entire line for chickens but still puts it in their game bird line. Anyway, a chicken can never be a vegitarian because it will always eat insects.

I buy Southern states brand chicken feed and I think it has animal protein.

Anyway, a chicken can never be a vegitarian because it will always eat insects.

I think they just say vegitarian, because of what they feed them. Chickens should have both meat and plants in there diet.

Will a vagen eat vegitarian chicken eggs?

Southern States poultry feed does NOT have animal protein in it. Just their game bird line.

Here is what eggland best says:
Special, Unique Hen Feed

It all starts with the special Eggland’s Best hen feed. Eggland’s Best hen feed is a patented all natural, all vegetarian feed that contains healthy grains, canola oil, and an all natural supplement of rice bran, alfalfa, sea kelp and Vitamin E. The Eggland’s Best hen feed contains no animal fat, no animal byproducts, and no recycled or processed food. Eggland’s Best never uses hormones, or antibiotics of any kind. Simply put, because the Eggland’s Best hen diet is superior, Eggland’s Best hens lay nutritionally superior eggs.

Not necessarily vegetarian chickens by choice but they are fed a vegetarian diet.
