Vegetarian Chickens?

A chickens favorite food is chicken. Thus, poultry feed that contains poultry byproducts is actually quite natural.

I was thinking... perhaps they were infertile eggs for ovo vegetarians, but chickens on a strictly vegetarian diet? Poor things...

Chickens love meat, any meat: coon, possums, snakes, mice, other chickens, pork, beef, fish, etc...

From what I've been reading bone meal is good and fish meal is outstanding for poultry feed.

Really? Don't you worry about spongiform encephalitis with bone meal, though? I have been reading about that and that is some scary stuff. I was feeding it to my plants and I stopped because of that.

True- I watched my duck eat a mouse, and I eat the duck's eggs. I am a vegetarian and for some reason was not bothered by that.

i watched a show on spongiform encephalitis a while back. i believe they said it was originally caused by feeding scrapie-infected sheep remains to cattle. i'm not sure if it is common practice to feed meat by-products to cattle in this country. i certainly avoid by-products in my cat's food.

i guess you can only be as careful as you can, and buy any animal products from respected sources.

I guess you have to make sure that the bone meal is not coming from outside of the US.

Unfortunately, we never really know what cows are fed. Corn is a big one (very species inappropriate) and they are also fed other cow's remains as I understand it. Cows are fed a terrible diet which is why they are on antibiotics as long as they are in CAFOs.

I haven't fed my chickens actual meat, but I did feed them a little cat food. They have always accepted treats fairly quickly. They eat a lot of garden scraps, loved the cherrys that dropped off the tree, especially if they had a work in them. They love grass, weed clippings out of the garden. Don't have watermelon, but they liked cantelope.

Chickens do love meat!! Mine sure do. When we skin deer they come running like you have never seen and will fight the dogs to get the scraps!!! LOL It is so hilarious to watch them jump up trying to get it while still hanging on the gamble!

I think chickens that eat bugs or such that is considered meat is very good for them and helps make for a MUCH better tasting chicken...not to mention they are healthier for it IMO

We as humans were designed to eat meat and healthy meat is VERY VERY good for you!!!! I saw a program once on the difference in vegetarians and people who ate meat and the folks who had meat in their diets totally beat the vegetarians in every aspect they looked at as far as being more healthy/more energy/etc...every part the meat eaters won.

IMO Deer, fish, and chicken are the best meat for people. I get my beef from a man down the road who raises healthy chemical/anitbiotic free cows. I get to go pick out the one I want to butcher and I will pick the healthiest looking one.
