Vegetarian Chickens?

Heelers&Chickens_OhMy :

Unfortunately, we never really know what cows are fed. Corn is a big one (very species inappropriate) and they are also fed other cow's remains as I understand it. Cows are fed a terrible diet which is why they are on antibiotics as long as they are in CAFOs.

That very well may be true. Not sure if we have regulations preventing that. i think Whole Foods Markets is pretty specific on where they get any of their meat and fish and what kind of diet they were raised on. But dang, they are expensive.

It appears to me that chickens will eat just about anything. Our chickens seem to think there is not much finer than a delectable little brown bat. Our cats catch them in the house, leave the carcasses as evidence of their prowess, all the while being very respectful of their prey; the corpses are always in pristine condition. The chickens, on the other hand, are not so gentile, finding the bats tasty little morsels and objects of scorn, mutilating the beasts horribly.

Last time I checked, insects were part of the animal kingdom (just saying

Vegetarian Chickens?

I feel some people are very Gullible. They will not question it, will take it a face value, and Purchase the Eggs. Believing them to be better for them.
Me on the other hand would more than likely comment in the store. Are they Vegan Chickens? ...lol
Or will they eat by products from other animals?... lol

I bought some of those vegetarian eggs just to see the difference. They were the nastiest, flatest tasting eggs I have ever tasted. I didnt tell the wifey I used them in her scrambled eggs and she asked me why her eggs tasted like cardboard. FYI I make awesome scrambled eggs, but no amount of doctoring could change the flavour...

In the end the remainder of the carton got fed to the dogs....

If your chickies are eatin' bugs then they aren't vegetarian chickens

And if they aren't eating bugs, they are in a tiny cage with no sunlight, no grass, etc...

Basically you are paying extra for crappy eggs from poorly fed battery hens.

In regards to chickens, I've done a lot of research there too. Chickens need animal proteins, IMO, especially Methionine and Lysine. No soy or other vegetable protein is going to provide the proper amino acids for poultry over a long term. I had a very long phone conversation with the head feed guy at Southern States about this, and he essentially concurred, but said they weren't going to change their feed formulation for a small market of backyard people like me (their primary market is the battery farms.)

So, bottom line, anyone marketing "vegetarian eggs from vegetarian chickens" is preying on the gullibility of the modern day, too-far-removed-from-the-food-source consumer.

Chickens eat other animals, including other chickens if they can. It's just how it is. If you're smart, you'll provide your chickens with a feed that has a source of animal proteins in it. But that's just what I think.

.....as for the watermelon....my great-grandmother swore that feeding watermelon to chickens gives them the "Sore Head."

Turns out, what was happening was they would dip the top of their heads in the juice and become sticky..then the bugs would prey on the tops of their heads.

Now, I cut up the pieces into smaller, pieces so they are not dipping their heads into a virtual bowl. And, voila...no Sore Head!

But my flocks loves a good melon, heck, who doesn't!
