Vegetarian & Low Carb Recipes And Discussion

Not only do I agree with Wifezilla, but a co-worker who is diabetic confirmed my belief by stating that "drinking fruit juice is the same as turning up a bowl of sugar and downing it."

If you pureed the fruit and vegetables in a blender or food processor and then proceeded to drink it without straining out the pulp, then you would be getting the fiber in the flesh of the fruits and vegetables. Doesn't your juicer have a strainer on it for the peel and seeds? It's probably removing the pulp too. But I do not know for sure as I have not used a juicer.

Perhaps if you had information from unbiased sources you could determine how much of the healthful pulp you are actually getting when juicing fruits and vegetables. It is possible that the actual digestion of the fruit fiber in the human system is what prevents the body from raising the blood sugar levels too high. The fruit sugar is assimilated by the body differently when whole fruit is ingested as opposed to ingesting just the juice of the fruit. That is the point I wish to make.

You people are really messing up my plan here. Stop educating and
teaching me stuff already. Here I was wrapped up in my ideas that
sugar wasn't bad for you (although in moderation I still think it's ok,
not the massive quantities that many of us consume in a day), that
eating only vegies, rice and beans was gonna solve all my problems,
and that world peace can be brought about by me using my rice maker
more.

I watched that Gary Taubes video and bought the Protein Power
audiobook edition. I liked Gary a lot. I think a lot like he does when
it comes to science. He completely changed my paradigm about insulin
sugar, and other diet related issues.

Ok, back to juice just one time. My breakfast this morning consisted
of the juice of 1 apple, 1 pair, 2 carrots, and a lemon slice plus 2 cups
of black coffee(no sugar). Normally I wouldn't have eaten anything up
to this point in the day. What are your thoughts on that? Rome wasn't
built in a day and it's taken me 38 years to grow this gut.

Good points and thanks for contributing to this conversation. I'm gonna
try those zuchini sandwiches you posted in a prior post. Yumm!!

My juicer does have a screen but also grinds things up well. I upgraded
to it after burning out a lesser model. It generates very little pulp, most
of which is the skin of the fruits or carrots I put in it. I know the skins
are good for you but they are also coated with waxes and pesticides I
don't like putting in my body.

Ummmm....I would have offered you some protein with that coffee and juice - maybe an egg?
or 1 oz. of cheese melted on one slice of whole wheat toast?
or 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese sprinkled with a little cinnamon sugar with apple slices?
or 1 cup plain yogurt with some thawed frozen berries and a little sweetener of your choice?

Adding plain yogurt and cottage cheese to grocery list.

I'm glad you brought up the yogurt. As I sit here reading this label
on my yogurt container (I ate as a snack before bed) that is has
39 grams of sugar and only 9 grams of protein. That's not too good
is it?

Well peepless, here is where we part ways. Fat-free dairy is SUGAR LOADED dairy. Look at the carbohydrate count. When you take out the fat, you have to put something in. Starches and fillers (sugars) then take that place. Leave out the fat in that cottage cheese and you just leave lots of lactose. Removing fat from products is a lot like juicing. You take out the good stuff and munch on the bad stuff thinking you are doing a good thing.

There is nothing unhealthy about natural unprocessed fats. Fats do not make you fat. Sugars and carb do. Fat is comprised of fatty acids. ESSENTIAL fatty acids. Your body and brain NEED them. Fat is also what signals your body that you are FULL. Take out the fat and you are constantly hungry and your body is going to keep sending that hunger signal because it doesn't have the nutrients it needs.

Now, back to breakfast. Protein is important. This may blow your mind a bit, but have you considered egg creams? Raw egg, almond milk or heavy cream (or coconut milk), sugar-free sweetener of choice, and ice. It takes seconds to whip up, it very filling and it's very nutritious.

I know..raw egg??? I freaked out a little too when I first tried them. They were highly recommended by some of my low carb forum buddies so I decided to brave it. Besides, they were using store bought eggs (ewww!) and I, at least, knew how fresh my eggs were.

If there is high fructose corn syrup on the label, you may want to go scrub off your tongue!

For a real treat with the yogurt, see if you can find Greek yogurt. Like peep said, add some berries and some sweetener and you have a great breakfast.

Egg creams sound interesting. I wouldn't eat a raw egg from the store
but since I have these feathered creatures running around my yard I
may have to try it.

Raw eggs don't scare me, store eggs do.

Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, whey modified food starch...

Aren't they all pretty much the same. Holy chicken poo. I look at my
dog's food labels more than I do my own.

Sorry. I didn't mean to make your brain hurt.
