My son found a pullet in the flock this morning with a seriously attacked vent - I'm thinking the nearly 4 oz egg in the barn came from her and must have caused a bit of prolapse and the other chickens really attacked her - she was very bloody and "extruded" when I found her - I brought her to the house and used a warm water bath to clean all the blood off her back end. It's very ugly meaty looking - I smeared it with Preparation H and put her in a pen alone to recover with food and water. Within about 20 minutes or so, a significant visual reduction was observed. Can she recover and heal normal? This is my first time to have to deal with vent pecking.
I think I did ok on cleaning and doctoring and secluding her.
Is there anything else I can or should do? Or even done differently?
(Yesterday I lost one of my pullets when my 5 yr old gelding stomped her
I just can't take too much more chicken trauma today
