I have a year old or so Silkie who presented with a minor prolapse. Only saw some pink healthy tissue emerge when she pooped or was startled. I was treating with haemorrhoid cream (prep h) and monistat incase of vent gleet and decided to just give the whole flock plain yogurt mixed with nutridrench (twice a week) and apple cider vinegar in the water. She was eatting and drinking, acting as normal. Only appeared slightly puffed up, similar to the others but the weather has just dropped below zero 2 weeks back so I figured that may be why. A few days ago I noticed a large mass under her vent that is crusty on the top and appears to be an abcess? Or is this the prolapse pertruding from the inside? I assumed she had got pecked as her vent had some signs of bleeding and this infected mass was new. It is firm and hard not squishy. At this point I decided to bring her into the house where she can be warm and isolated. I have been doing epsome salt baths every 2 days, raw honey applied just inside the vent once a day, monistat applied to the outter swollen vent 3x a day and just inside the vent once a day and hemmeroid cream applied just inside the vent 1x per day. I am applying polysporin to the “abscess” 3x a day. Her water still has apple cider vinegar in it and I spray her vent with vetericyn plus 3x a day

She continues to decline. The feces went from being watery and white/pastey with some solid bits to green and now often consisting of only blood and mucus. The bleeding has progressively got worse, it appears theres a sore on just the inside of the vent that bleeds much more anytime I apply medication. Sometimes as she is straining she just pushes out globs of blood. As a result I have not tried to fix the prolapse, I worry if I insert a gloved finger fully she will bleed out. I have been hoping it would retract when swelling subsides but so far the swelling is barely improving. I have squirted iodine into the vent in hopes of preventing further infection. She is eatting and drinking less and less. She appears as of yesterday to spend all day completely fluffed up and straining as if trying to poop which she was not doing before. When I apply creams to the protruding tissue she squats and shakes like she is trying to push it out. I am able to get a raw egg into her once a day, and plain yogurt mixed with tums and nutridrench once a day. She is no longer finishing her bowl and just taking a few bites. She will no longer eat any actual crumble, even when mixed/soaked.

Has anyone got any suggestions? What would you try differently

Thanks!

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions, but it looks very dramatic, and a late stage of whatever it is... I would consider humanely euthanizing her.

The above is what I would do.

I do not know what this is, but it must be related to the prolapse or pecking.

The feces went from being watery and white/pastey with some solid bits to green and now often consisting of only blood and mucus. The bleeding has progressively got worse, it appears theres a sore on just the inside of the vent that bleeds much more anytime I apply medication.

I would treat her with alternating vitamin water with a little bit of molasses mixed in, like a few drops in a cup, and probiotic water. Molasses will help her clear her digestive tract and loosen her poop up. Avoid giving it daily or in excessive amounts, as it could cause more harm than good. Alternating days of giving vitamin water and probiotic water or yogurt can be continued indefinitely.

The green in the poop could be a sign of not eating much. I would make her feed into a mash (a mixture with water) and not let her have anything fibrous, like vegetables, right now. Scrambled eggs would be a healthy treat for her too. The blood, I presume, is coming from the vent bleeding internally. I'm hoping this stops once she is kept calm, fed soft foods, and doesn't get constipated. Just apply the Prep H externally. Let the inside calm down and hopefully heal.

I would continue the Epsom salt soaks daily, applying the Prep H to the prolapse three times a day and your antibacterial cream to the sore/abscess.

I had one similar, with the exception of the abscess, and it took a few weeks to heal up and be nearly normal. She still has a slight protrusion of her vent, but it's healthy and doesn't cause any issues with laying or breeding.

I would like to see if @Eggcessive, @Wyorp Rock or anyone else familiar with extreme prolapses could help too.

I will be humanely euthanizing if I do not see improvement soon. As of now she is still bright eyed and clucking when she sees me and walks around (in a strange stance though). Shes perking up when I bring her the egg etc but losing interest after a few bites.

My only concern with this is I don’t think theres any food in her digestive tract atm. I worry more loosening will cause worse diarrhea. I agree that the green poop is probably bile/lack of food. In glad to hear your similar case turned out! Maybe I don’t treat internally at all until the bleeding stops. I thought about putting some syptic powder in there to stop the bleeding but im not sure where exactly or how high in its coming from. Or if introducing anything else risks more infection

I may try scrambling the eggs, for now though she isnt pecking or “eatting”, so I have been giving her food in any form she can drink (the nutridrench, raw egg, yogurt etc)

This is the part I'm hoping someone else with more experience in internal bleeding can help as that's beyond the usual prolapse that I've dealt with.

Is taking her to a vet out of the question?

Also, I'm thinking she may need an antibiotic to prevent infection internally. Let's give it a few minutes and see if someone else has some ideas for you.

There isn’t anyone who will treat chickens here unfortunately. Where I used to live I had a great vet for my chickens but that is 2 hours away and theres too much snow to make that drive today. I work all week and I will be up that way next weekend but I don’t know what will happen with her condition in a weeks time.

Perhaps I can get a hold of cattle antibiotics or something from the feed store. In Canada this stuff is super hard to get without a vet though

If it comes to her getting an antibiotic, those we get online without a prescription. But I don't want to suggest that until we get another opinion from @Eggcessive or @Wyorp Rock, my two go to peeps here. @azygous has most likely dealt with similar too.
