Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help. I have a chicken who has vent gleet. She has a white crusty discharge coming from her vent, the other girls were picking on her so I separated her and I took her to the vet. He gave me some solution to clean her and some Canisten cream, he said it was a yeast infection but didn't think it was internal. I questioned this as quite clearly it is running out of her, he said to get some live probiotic powder to give to her and she would be fine! I have been giving her the probiotics and cleaning her every day and the soreness has calmed down but she is still leaking white smelly discharge. I phoned the vet today to say no improvement and to ask for some Nystatin liquid suspension as I have read that is what she needs as it is antifungal, but they said they do not stock that and would be happy to prescribe Baytrill instead. Baytrill is an antibiotic which I believe is gonna be no use and may even make her worse? I have tried a garlic clove in her water and everything else suggested in chicken forums, has anyone any advise please, my poor little Ashley is tired of having a sore bum!

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry to hear your girl is having problems. Try posting your details over on the emergency/disease forum and someone there should be able to help you out:

And if you haven't already tried it, put vent gleet in the search box in the upper left corner to review posts on this subject...maybe you'll find a post there with some good information.

Hope things clear up soon.

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome Animal House!

As luck would have it I was just looking into this subject today and I think this page may be helpful to you http://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2013/09/vent-gleet-symptoms-causes-and-natural.html

Try using some Athletes foot cream or monostat on her Vent. and where it is red it will help to soothe her and take away some of the burning and itching. DO NOT USE ANTIBIOTICS! They will kill all the good bacteria in her system and make it worse!~ It will zero out the probiotics. Keep her separate so she is comfortable and is not spreading it to the others.

I would also add some electrolytes and vitamins to her water if you have it.

Good luck keep us posted on how she is doing
