I'm new too chicks. I ordered 20 and one started having an issue with pastu butt right away. I read everything. Did everything suggested and cleaned her gently, usually under soft running warm water and dried her feathers with a towel. She cleared up from it about a week after she arrived. Since then though she stains to go to the bathroom and churps loud. Recently i noticed her strain and it looks like pink intestine is coming like a 1/4" out of her vent area and the waste just sits there likes it's not coming out all the way. Other times poops fine. It looks like normal chick poo. She eats and drinks and is getting bigger. The last 3 days her vent has had clear liquid coming out. Her vent looks crispy so i put mineral oil on it occasionally. What do i do? She looks in pain and that pink thing coming out and the clear liquid is definitely not normal. She is a mail ordered Rhode island

Sounds like you may have your brooder too warm. Do they have a cool spot to get away from the heat? The heat lamp has a tendency to stiffen things up back there. Make sure they have plenty of room to move in and out of the heated area and that you are lowering the temp enough each week that they are comfortable in the heat.

To help this one along, offer some yogurt mixed with some of their feed to an oatmeal consistency. That should help loosen things up.

I will give it a try. The lamp is about 2' or more above the brooder with cool areas to go to. I'm still confused about the clear liquid. It dries up and makes that crumbly yellow on her vent.

When chickens get too hot, they drink a lot more as a way to cool themselves. It causes diarrhea.

You can tell if the brooder is too hot or too cold by the way the chicks act. If they huddle under it, they're cold, if they try to get as far away from it as possible, its too hot. You can find the perfect temp when they all form a semicircle around the sweet spot. Usually their back ends are pointed inwards and that lets the poo dry faster. Just keep raising the lamp until they are comfortable directly under it.

How old are they? The warm months are here, they may not need a heat lamp at all, or maybe only at night.

I believe they are in the sweet spot. No one huddles under the light, they run around freely and sleep along the edge of the light sometimes under it depending on the night time temps. The light is only in one half of their trough they are in and they have plenty of room to go to coooler areas. Night time temps are 50s here in mn. Days are scattered 50-80 depending on the weather that day. I really don't think its a pasting issue at all. She has clear fluids coming out of her bum. I started using acv in the water. I'm wondering if she has a developmental issue. Maybe yeast? I don't see any bloody stools or I'd maybe suggest cocci. I had them on non medicated and didn't opt for the cocci treatment when mail ordering them from my pet chicken. I'm actually pretty disappointed with that company, but that is another issue. I really wish someone had experienced this clear fluid before. It dries up and turns flaky and a hint of yellow just like the pic. It doesn't smell and it doesn't seem like diarrhea at all. So confused. She drinks and eats.
