The pic's are both of cockrels & pullets. I agree with you on trying this and do not agree with those who say OHHH NOOO !!!! you shouldn't do it ever, what the hech is that all about. Let me clarify one thing Experience means, the thing in most area's of chicken raising and that is confidence, You have to be totaly confident in your own abilities to handle birds. I feel your attitude is great and your confidence is what is required, good for you. Handling birds in the way I am describing is not just gently picking up a chick and playing kissy face with it, the whole time being afraid your going to drop or hurt it as these Nay sayers want you to believe. WTS You must have an unwaivering confidence in the thought that yes I can do this !!! it ain't brain surgery !!!. At first a very small amount of poop will have to be expelled it's the chicks first discharge we call this clearing the vent. Have a good Magnifing glass available it comes in very handy, when you first try vent sexing have another helper to just hold the magnifing glass for you so you can have both hands available to better do the exam. Hold the chick firmly it will stop wiggling instantly, if you are to gentle with it the chick won't stop sqauling, firmly apply slight presure to expel the poop wipe the vent and then with your thumb and forefinger and both sides of the vent apply presure with the other three fingers to the chicks body cavity until the vent begins to expose itself. Apply enough presure and with your other hand use your fingers to open the vent and do your exam using the Magnifing glass as an aid. return the chick to the brooder and it will be just fine & Dandy.
To be perfectly honest it's a very easy task and is totaly safe............................ it is done at all of the hatcheries by the thousands daily mainly by high school kids. I cannot say enough about those folks who want to discourage others from learning because of their own inadequate ability to handle poultry, we are a learning & sharing forum and we need to share so we can learn plain and simple.
