We adopted this 3 year old hen from a flock of about 40 girls in a nice backyard coop. It wasn’t a large space but seemed clean and secure. When we got her to her new home, we noticed her back side was discolored with poop. After further investigation, she had this massive dark hard ball of what we thought was dried poop, But it was all around her vent and was almost closing it up. We cut it off and cleaned her vent but we cant get the scab to fall off. It seems to grow with the yellow discharge that adheres to the scab and gets bigger. She wasn’t laying eggs at first, but now she is and they are discolored with the discharge. She eats well, has fresh water, good food and lots of free range space. We take her in daily and soak her in epsom salt and try to clean the discharge and cut back the growth. But if we cut too far it bleeds. We treat it with wound care and iodine. Anyone have any idea what this is and how we can fix it?

Welcome To BYC

I would be careful and sure about what you are cutting, especially if it bleeds.

The hen may have suffered a prolapse and what you cut may be tissue.
Give her a soak in a warm epsom salts bath. You can use a little original Dawn to help cleanse away some of the crustiness.

Mineral oil or coconut oil applied to the crust to keep it moist and hopefully it will loosen up a bit and start falling away.

Thanks foe your comments. we dont think she has a prolapse since she had started layed eggs again. and the mass on her vent had improved on the top, but the lower end keeps building up from the discharge. We soaked her again tonight in Emerson Salt and applied both iodine and olive oil. She is a sweet hen and we hope to keep her. Any other suggestions would be helpfull. We bought some antibodtics to give her next week. Has anyone else had this issue? By the way she really stinks bad. We hope to have her in our flock a long time

I'd continue to give her soaks and apply ointment to the wound.

You can try an antibiotic to see if that helps. See that her crop is emptying overnight.
Hopefully she will heal up soon.

Are there any updates on your chicken Suewhite? I have a hen that is going through this too. I took her to the vet they took the scab off and gave me a topical antibiotic. After a few days it came back. I don’t want to spend a lot of money for no answers to take her to the vet again. I did see mite eggs, treat them, dewormed them and still haven’t seen a change in her. I also had her on an antibiotic with no result.
