Venting about Roosters

I also don't get people saying they don't want to rehome them because they're afraid somebody's going to eat them! Chickens were never meant to be pets, but us humans have made all animals into pets.

Some of us don't eat birds. We cannot stop others from eating birds. We can definitely stop them from eating our birds, and it's in anyone's right to refuse selling a cockerel for the soup pot. I have poultry as pets. In general, they are some of the best animals for pets, and much better suited than the expensive exotic birds that are not domesticated. I would love a flock of pretty cockerels if I had the property for it, and I am not alone in that. Not everybody keeps birds for utility.

I have a layer flock that is used for my entertainment and eggs. They will live with us until the day they pass from old age.

I also have meat chickens.

I'm someone who uses chickens for all that they provide.. eggs, meat, and entertainment.

It's all fine and dandy if people use chickens for pets, but it's not okay when they're keeping them when they legally arent supposed to.

If you rehome a rooster or cockerel, you can't expect everyone to treat them as a pet, it's unrealistic. It may be realistic for some of us, but a lot of people see chickens as food.

Great vent, wish I could have rooster in my flock, but laws say no.
There are some crowing now around here but I'm pretty sure that is Georges feed stores roosters about a half mile away from me.
The one way to get around the rooster ordinance would be to move to yuba city California.
its awesome roosters are everywhere.
first time I drove through on hwy 99 I was in shock ,but it is really cool and the one place I know if you have backyard chickens and a no rooster law it would not matter in yuba.

I absolutely love my roosters! I cannot wait to see how their babies grow! I wasn't even supposed to get them, they were a mix up from a hatchery so I'm using them for a better purpose than the dinner table because they're too gorgeous... I let them grow out for 5 months because I was unsure if they were males, but when they started crowing I knew.
