Vertical (gravity) vs. horizontal (spring loaded) watering nipples

Haven't seen a problem with the sand ingestion, they do eat it I'm sure, but doesn't appear to be detrimental.
I used paper towels over the sand for the first day until they were eating out of the feeder.
Mine are 4 weeks old tomorrow. I raised another batch on sand up to 3 weeks for someone else, who then gave them all away...so don't have any long term, first hand experience. I read extensively about it before trying it, found several folks who seemed to have done it for a long time successfully, so I went for it. I use a reptile poop scooper to clean up.

K thanks for the 3 day water advice. What kind of cup drinker?

Someone PM'd me: Solway Feeders suggest 2 to 3 weeks with a shallow dish.along with the nipples and then remove the dish.

I use the cup drinkers we make but you could use any kind that holds a shallow pool of water. I've never waited much longer than 10 days to switch to the horizontal nipples except for small quail. I think it depends on the type of bird and if they were shipped or not. Shipped birds will always have some stress. Follow whatever schedule you feel comfortable with.

Oh, Those cup waterers...... I love your products!!!
Thanks! I'm now working on my duckling drinkers and just in time for a flood of muscovy ducklings to test them out. I have four hens sitting on nests. They hatch ducks MUCH better than I do.

I want some of these for my girls. But I was wondering if they could be shipped to Canada??????

Question for the ones using the horizontal ones. I have them in my boarder and my older chicks in there seem to be using them. I did the method of taking out the old water and just leaving the nipples in there and then at night I would but the old one back in let them drink out of it and back out for 3 nights then just the nipples. I showed all the chickens that the water comes from there. My question is seems my week old we got from my wife's work (the Librarian hatched some with the kids at the school) seems to always be standing at the water. I'm not sure she can push it yet to get water. If you hit it with your finger she runs up to drink the water in the cup.

I guess my question is should I wait till she is a little bit older then fully relay on the nipple. She rushes to old old water if I put it back in.

Thanks for your help in advance I have learned a lot from this page already.

Solway says there is no problem after 3 weeks of age. That act they put on starving or dieing of thirst is just a chicken thing!!

Thanks, being one of them is just a week and 2 days old, maybe I'll put the other water in for a little while then break them all of it again. Thanks for your help.
