Your older babies probably help your younger one whenever they get a drink themselves. I put an older baby in with my littles as teachers to make the transition easy. All you need is one bird in the group who knows how to do it. The chicks nudge the pin sideways, not straight in so it doesn't take much force to get water. I figure if a 2 week old quail can do it, a chick should have no trouble. My jumbo brown coturnix switch to the horizontal nipples at two weeks old. All of your birds would rush to a mud puddle if one suddenly appeared! It's hardwired into the chicken brain.Question for the ones using the horizontal ones. I have them in my boarder and my older chicks in there seem to be using them. I did the method of taking out the old water and just leaving the nipples in there and then at night I would but the old one back in let them drink out of it and back out for 3 nights then just the nipples. I showed all the chickens that the water comes from there. My question is seems my week old we got from my wife's work (the Librarian hatched some with the kids at the school) seems to always be standing at the water. I'm not sure she can push it yet to get water. If you hit it with your finger she runs up to drink the water in the cup.
I guess my question is should I wait till she is a little bit older then fully relay on the nipple. She rushes to old old water if I put it back in.
Thanks for your help in advance I have learned a lot from this page already.
