Very Disturbed by What I'm Reading So Far

All I can say is, to each his own. I love my chickens. I will never show my chickens. I have "pure breds" and mutts. Both kinds give me eggs. Both kinds take away my stress and worries when I'm outside watching "chicken TV." They don't care that I'm a mutt, too - mother's family German, father's Scottish, and I'm an American.

I understand needing to keep lines pure for show, but I'm not all that worried about the lineage of a chicken, and neither are they. If I showed any of my chickens their family tree, they would just eat it.

My thoughts agree with you IF we were talking about dogs and horses... In those species let the knowledgeable people perform crosses to get new breeds and keep the rest pure, I hate shi-poos, but understand labradoodles... Don't just cross breed to make money.

BUT, my objection is that you have stated how to successfully breed poultry like you are an award winning breeder of 20 years, when you yourself have stated you have only been involved at a 4H/ FFA level... Seems to me like you are one of the BS-ers you have warned us all against.

I won't post again, but I think this thread is just the bs we have to sift through to find good facts from experienced breeders, and we'd all do well to try to allow the experienced breeders to post more.

Sadly, by the time people know enough to realize just how much they don't know they are generally out there doing, not posting on forums (at least not much anyway).

hybrid vigor.... just like me.... I'm Irish, English, Dutch and German... (Dang, I must be fat, short, and unable to tan without burning...) (Ummm... 2 out of three, anyway....)

I honestly think that the OP put this out to stir the pot and see how many people get riled over "mutt" chickens. If the OP is buying from hatcheries, he/she can't be seriously breeding any "purebred" chicken. Some people just like to throw things out there to get people riled up. IMO

Yall

i think he is talking about keeping the breeds seprate AFter the breeds have been 1) estbalsed.

any way's i agree that inbreeding is bad very bad. Will i KNOW it is bad, and i have exprinced what it can do (17 chicks out of 48 eggs, in a professenal grade incubator!)
Now i have a project that will be haping in the next 2 years. BUT i know what i want it to be like, and it would be just a new colour then, i would countine to work on it etc.

Also i had to read the post 2 times (there first post) i see what cross breeding did to the aruacana's, i do not want to see MASS cross breeding agian, but know that i will.

it does not say any where that he/she ordered or tgot birds from a hatchry any wheres.

he is not trying to "stir the pot" just giving his opin on mixed breeds, by the way i have read it

I have mutts proud of it and there eggs taste no differant than the other.. As a matter of fact my EE girl is the BEST layer I have. So I think this is just an opinion and won't take it to heart.

I like my "mutts" which I'm continuing to breed toward a dual purpose eggs/meat Midwest adapted backyard flock. I was always a little bit suspicious of people touting purity and appearance over function---now I'm sure of it.
