So I take it tobacco was used to de-worm?
Never had a worm issue where I live because of the colder winters.
I guess you guys/gals in the south have a much bigger problem with longer hot periods.

I have heard it is easier to stay healthily in colder climates because of much less parasites etc.

If it was store bought tobacco and you did not grow it yourself you have to remember that they add many different chemicals to it. I have heard up to a hundred.

So if you didn't drown the bird it might not have been the tobacco but one or a combination of the deadly chemicals they treat it with.
