I understand you feeling bad but you did good... JMHO.... I have heard that to test your coop you can lock a cat in and see if it can escape... maybe you could lock her cat in a day or so and see where it gets out, same place it got in would be my thought. It's to bad we have to work so hard to keep our chicks and chickens safe.

Actually, I'd be concerned if the cat was able to get in. That means that other, wild predators can also get in. I'd concentrate on securing your coop rather than killing the cat.

I wouldn't kill it, for the simple fact that you have alerted the owner to your "problem" with their cat.

If it were I, that cat would have been taken care of the first time. With a true SSS, but you knew who the owners were and contacted them. By trapping it and dropping it off at animal control, you get rid of that cat and the owner will have to pay to get it out of animal control. Animal control will also give the owner a more serious warning and let them know of their legal responsibilities to control their "pet".

Also, if that cat DOES kill something of yours, either immediately or through an injury. Be sure to persue compensation, it will let your neighbors know if their kitty is going to dine on your birds, he's going to be dining on the expense of his owner's pretty penny.

Be very careful when shooting a pet with BB's pellets or paintballs. In most jurisdictions it's legal to use lethal force to kill a predator, but it is illegal to just injure them. You can kill them, but not just bruise them or break the skin. They consider that cruelty. It's stupid, but that's the way it is. The law lets you kill a predator, but not just injure it. Next time trap it or shoot it with a real gun.

i'm not able to read all the posts yet so pls. forgive any duplication:
- - cat bite wounds on small beings almost always requires special antibiotic treatment for ~5 days (beyond neosporin) - wildlife rehab centers can advise. time is usually of the essence.
- - cats usually (i.e., not always) do not mess with grown chickens but 'chicklets' are very vulnerable - would keep them in a safe area till they get bigger.
the dopey lady should have been apologetic, not defensive. there seems to be an epidemic of such people who unfortunately, usually have reproduced.

pppppfffffftttt you should have shot her with the paintball gun. What an idiot. Oh I would take that last comment as a threat against my chickens. I would trap or kill the cats as soon as you see them on your property. If you trap them, take them to the pound and let her pay to get them back.

Personally I have SSS in the past and will again if need be in the future. I generally only kill when I need to, some do just on principle. I live at the end of the road, everyone here shoots problem animals. Most but not all give warnings to owners if possible just to keep the peace, but everyone here understands "if it ain't on your property it's like to git shot".

I really like the idea of paint marking, I'm going to have to get a paint ball gun. I'm going to modify my normal system:

Step 1) Tell owner
Step 2) Paint mark animal (spray paint if in live trap)
Step 3) Provide dirt nap

If at any point my animals are in immediate danger of harm ,excess stress, or I can't dissuade predator to go away in the process of step 1 or 2, go immediately to step three.

Hummmm come to think of it, maybe step 2b should be to paint mark owner. In your case maybe you could just take the owner to the pound!
