I am sorry you had to kill your neighbors cat. I would hate to do that- don't know if I could, but would not fault anyone for it. I am thankful that you were not directly injured by a toxic cat bite.

I've followed this whole thread, and I have one thought (at least that I'm going to put here). I don't think that trapping the cat would work. If a cat has a choice between a moving meal (really play) and a can of food in a trap, chances are it will go for the live food. Also (guess 2 thoughts, but along the same line) this started over a weekend/holiday, the animal control around here will not put out live traps on weekends/holidays, because if an animal gets trapped, it will sit in the trap until the next business day. So I really don't think the OP had any other choice. He gave fair warning to the owner, which is more than he had to do.

The county we live in does not have any animal control, oh they have a number listed in the phone book, but the shelter still has not been build, and living wayyyyy back in the woods on a dead end road, I think people just drop their cats off and think that they will survive by catching small wild animals (like rabbits) they have no idea that the cat who has always had his food placed in front of him is NOT going to hunt an animal,Now, (Off My soapbox), the next county over from ours, has traps that you can borrow to trap wild cats and bring them in,for me, driving 30 miles to borrow a trap that I know I will not be able to trap a cat in, then driving back to return the trap I feel is stupid. so if I catch a cat trying to catch my chickens it will cross over the Rainbow Bridge immediately.I think you far beyond what most people, (me) would have done.

The chickens were in his yard. The cat owner was warned. If The OP doesn't want to keep his birds in a protective iron bubble, it is his right to have them any way he wants as long as they are in his yard. The cat's owner didn't care about the cat. It is their fault, not the OP's. The cat in its own yard is a pet. When it is in the neighbor's yard killing someone else's animals, it's a predator. The OP already warned the neighbor. SHE DIDN'T CARE!!! And if he becomes known as the "the person who shoots cats and leaves them with notes in other people's yards," then maybe irresponsible pet owners will keep their roaming domesticated predators out of his yard.

I've got to agree with horsejody. I have two indoor cats. They are only allowed outside in our fenced backyard under supervision. I do not want to risk losing them to cat fights, dogs, coyotes, hawks, owls, cars, twisted-individuals and antifreeze, not to mention there's a cat leash law where I live. I warned a former coworker who let her cat wander all over, about antifreeze. A couple months later her cat drank some and died a very painful death. I don't think anyone who has seen the affects of antifreeze would let their cats outside. I understand the argument for barn cats, but I would just worry too much. Oh, and my cats have met most of my chickens. The little cat is friends with a BR and the big cat is scared to death of them (especially the silkies).

Bottom line is.. the cat was on HER property.. the people have been warned before.. they chose not to do anything about it. I am 100% behind her on that one..
Sometimes there is no reasoning with people at all. Her Property, her lifestock, her time and money and effort..

And to the " she didnt fortify her coop to make it predator proof.. There is NO such thing as predator proof..They will find a way to get in. Hunger and prey drive is a funny thing.

I dont care if I have my chickens in the open ON MY PROPERTY.
Control your animals or they will die..

its weird .. my own cats hate the chickens and wont even get close ot them .. stray cats is a different story tho.. last night we seen a huge main coon in the yard eyeballing the chickens who are on MY porperty . The cat wont live long if he goes after my chickens. The cta is no doubt feral as I was walking up to it it ran off really quick.

WOW. YOU did the right thing!

The neighbor is wrong.

I worry about the neighbors dogs (down the street) they always are getting out.....BUT if they end up anywhere near our chickens. WELL.

Seems we're having to do alot of "reminding" today about the rules of the P&P forum, so here goes again.

*This forum is for dealing with predators and pests. Period.

*If information is graphic, please note it in the subject line of your post so members can make a decision whether they want to open the thread or not. If you choose to open a thread with said warnings, it is not BYC's responsibility when you are offended.

*Dealing with predators and pests is not always pleasant. Although sometimes hard to do, please be as sensitive as possible when explaining procedures and results. Some younger members and/or squeamish adults will appreciate it.

*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means.

*Compassion will go a long way toward helping to educate and help solve someone's predator problem. No matter the reason, most members' birds are their pets and being a chicken doesn't make it less of a pet than a house cat or companion dog. Please don't lecture or hassle anyone about their losses. Glass houses......

*It is the responsibility of the person with the predator to determine the legalities of what they do and that person will take ultimate responsibility. BYC does not condone illegal acts.

For instance, Trapping..this is a legal defence and it is not open for debate whether you prefer this method or not. This forum is designed as an aid to those who are having predator problems. It is not a debate forum on ethics.

*Please keep this in mind as we all learn from one another how to deter predators. Thanks.
