What if that had been a child? If I were your neighbor, I'd find out who your mortgage company is so I could tell your homeowner's insurance that you were harboring dangerous animals.

I don't want to hear any of this "they were just being pheasants and doing what pheasants do" either...nor that cats are filthy anyways, and totally replaceable. It's offensive.

You need to do the right thing and pay for the cat, and for all the mouse damage that the cat may have prevented its owner, and for all the kittens the cat may have had in its lifetime that the owner could have sold at the flea market or from the Wal-Mart parking lot..

Way to go, pheasants.

There's something I do to people's pets that stray into my yard after my animals.

I contact them once, and if they feel it unessisary to keep what belongs to them out of my yard, then I simply let the animal control take care of it from there. Hey if they wont get the animal then animal control will. If the cat shows up again, dont kill it. Simply catch the darn thing, put it in a box and call animal control.

Dont tell them who it belongs to either. Or else they will just take it back to her and you will have the same mess on your hands all over again.

Completely off topic but I have to ask...

StrawberryHouseMouse, what is that pic in your avatar? I have stared at it and stared at it and I can not figure out what the heck it is.

so did YOU kill the cat, or did the bird?, I never read anywhere that the pheasant killed the cat.

just askin'

I'd never kill a cat, feral or otherwise, chickens-precious pets, livestock to US, are just food to a cat.

they do not know how to differ between that. "Oh, these chickens belong to a human, can't bother then" no cats don't do that, cats see a BIRD, and bird + = food.

same thing with all other predators, they see them as FOOD, not property.

so rather than blaming a CAT for doing what a CAT does, blame the people in charge of caring for the chickens, thats my thought.

every time our cocker has killed a chicken, it's not HIS fault, it's ours.are we going to shoot him, no.

we have cats, and they get fed daily, they also hunt, they keep the mice and rats away(for the most part). and they would, and probly HAVE killed a few of our young birds that have gone missing, thats not the cats faults, it's ours for not watching close enough.

our cats are just as much our pets as the chickens are.

case and point, if YOUR cat killed someones chicken, and they shot it, how would YOU feel?, no one ever thinks of that.

that being said, I'm glad your birds are safe.

The first cat the OP had to kill, it had attacked his chick, he tried detering it with paintballs and he warned the owner on several occasions what the cat ws doing and to keep it home (i.e. house cat or put it on a harness). The second cat was apperently killed by 40+ pheasents when it snuck into their cage in attempts to eat one.

"Anyways I come home to find an orange object in my pheasant cage. I grab my shotgun and book it up my yard to the pen. When I get there I see the other cat that that white one brought with it. But things were differnt this time. The cat was dead. It had several slashes all over its head and neck and its chest area. It noticed that its eyes were pecked out, and its juglur arety in its neck was severed.

So what happend I think was think cat broke back in to grab a snack, and the pheasants pecked and gashed it to death."

Ok, nobody faults the cat for hunting and being a cat, we fault the owners who have been warned and STILL do nothing to protect their cat. Anyone has the right to protect their animals-chickens, cows, dogs or cats- when they are on THEIR property from another animal that is trying to harm or kill the landowners animal(s). Most people would feel bad if it was their animal that got loose and had to be killed, but they would UNDERSTAND that it is there fault for not keeping their pet home and safe. period. I am sorry if you don't like this outcome, but there are laws in place to protect your property for a reason. You may want to reread the forum rules for the predator and pest section before posting in the future, just as a tip.

"*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means."

**Editted to include one of the rules for the predator and pest forum**
