Very odd... confusing...

Maybe it's odd goose year? I have Africans (you can sex them by the size of the knob on their head) and saw two 'mating' but it was the girl on top of the male! I have also heard of tom turkeys sitting on nests.

Wow farmer! That is too neat!

Raymond has goose friends and everything... he just didnt pair up. I know my one goose got paired with, but I can't tell who paired with the other one... and if anyone did for that matter!

It's eaiser to sex them when they are goslings. But you can still check. You need to restrain him as much as possible and lay him on his back and arrange it so the bird can be placed over a knee or table and keep the tail end over the edge so it can be bent back. From there you can apply some pressure on the cloaca and then slowly seperated the lips of the vent which should expose if male the penis. I use this after reading Loyl Stromberg's book on sexing.

We have african geese. The male takes turns sitting on the nest. When he isn't sitting on his mates nest, he will wait for the duck to get up from hers and set there. Never seems to be any argument over who owns the nest.
We hatched out several geese and both the male and the female take care of them. Kinda neat to watch. I took them, the babies, away because I want her to lay more eggs. But both of these geese are very maternal.
Before the bobcats and coyotes got my gaggle, we had several males that seemed to also have this trait.

Oh yes the Bobcats. Grr that is why I only have 2 male Embdens this year and not 3. I'm pretty sure My Male was leading the Bobcat away from the rest of my flock(they are always protecting them), because the place of the "scuffle" was in my neighbors yard and they never go over there. Sadley he got trapped between there shop a fence and a steep ravine and couldn't get away. We found a few remains down in our nieghbors woods.

A few weeks later the Bobcat was killed on the road about 100 feet from our house. It was about an 8 month old female. I guess she just moved in and thought it was a good place to stay.
