You did the right thing... but I know that doesn't really help with how you're feeling now. No matter how much we tell ourselves the logical truth, we as pet owners still tend to feel guilty when we aren't able to come to the rescue and make everything alright for our animal "babies". Having to put a pet down is a hard thing to do, especially when their life is cut short by injury or illness. The good news is that she is suffering anymore and she knows that you were there for her, in her time of need. Of course, you will feel better with time. Always remember - you are still a good "mommy"!

Today one of my little cochin passed her first egg. She did not lay it, it was in a sac hanging from her vent. I cleaned and clipped feathers around her bottom and pushed the parts back in like I read to do. It also feels like there is another egg inside her.

Each time she poops it comes back out.

This last poop it is not as bad, but I am still very worried about her. She acts really sad and battered. I have her inside in a cage covered with a towel to keep it dark as possible. I also used honey last time based on a suggestion about the natural healing properties of honey.

Any other suggestions? Should I get antibiotics?

Fluffy is my granddaughters favorite and I may try to find a vet tomorrow.

I took Fluffy to the vet this AM. She is expected to recover. She had a second large egg right behind the one that passed. It had a soft shell and possibly double yolk, so it was large but broken. She also passed it today. She is finally eating.

A bit of info, the vet stated that honey was fine to use on the prolapse and to lubricate a glove to use to push back in. He said NOT to use vasaline as it is a petroleum product and if it works it way up the oviduct it could be fatal.

Thanks for the info about the Vaseline, you may have kept someone else from killing their bird.

We went through the first egg prolapse yesterday also. Buffy's butt did not look as bad as your bird, we had no bleeding. I soaked her in warm water, cleaned her up and made an incision to remove the egg, then slathered her with neosporin and pushed the membrane back inside. Today she is walking around the yard acting fine although her butt is matted, wet and covered with crap. I will catcher when I can and give her another bath and lube her vent with more neosporin unless I get better advise here soon. Thanks again for sharing what your vet told you.

I trimmed the feathers from my bird's behind. That helped a lot to keep her clean. Unfiltered honey or a mixture made by boiling water and sugar help with reducing swelling. The bet have me glucose, but said I could just boil water and sugar. Just dip her butt or squirt it on if needed.

Amazing news, This girl is now laying a nice medium sized egg. She has laid about every other day for last two weeks.

I never expected to see an egg from her again.
