Your very first sentence totally alarmed me:

My kitten (about 18 weeks old) has had diarrhea for three or four weeks now.

Kittens that young are fragile. The next time you notice such an alarming symptom: take your pet to the vet sooner rather than later. It's chances of recovery are much greater at the onset of a problem rather than after it has been debilitated for several weeks.

I would maybe take a wait and see approach for 24 hours, but that's about it. If the kit does have a fatal disease, you would have known about it much sooner and you could have ended his life and spared him from the suffering. If he isn't fatally sick, then he could have been successfully treated and the symptoms (suffering) treated much sooner.

I'm really happy that he seems to be on the mend. Don't forget to keep the vet in the loop.
