VERY stubborn doughy crop with gas

Today she is subdued a bit. Flushing alot. I did feed her some sprouted grain bread in water and an egg yoke. Gave her antibiotics. Later i may try some homemade grits and rice. Something to firm it things up. Some more vitamins.

She is drinking A LOT of water. I am alternating plain water and probiotic/electrolyte water.

"Doughy" crop I take to mean impacted crop. We call yeasty crops sour crop. They are two different crop disorders. I wrote this https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/ to explain the treatments that have worked well for me. It may give you another angle on the issue.

Impacted crop often happens when the digestive tract is sluggish or a lot of high cellulose foods and not enough water are consumed. If the crop is hard, we introduce coconut oil and massage the lumpy crop until the lump breaks up and goes down. If the mass has been lingering in the crop for a while, it may also be yeasty. So the second step is to use miconazole to get rid of the yeast. Or an Epsom salt flush will also work to flush out the entire system, including any yeast.

Hi, half of my flock has been struggling with this as well and I’m so confused. It is not impacted crop, and I’m hesitant to say that it is “Sour” crop because I’ve dealt with sour crop in the past and right now none of my girls have smelly breath at all however their crops are like soft balloons filled with air and a little liquid. Their crops feel like water balloons almost and if you massage air comes up their beaks so they are very gassy? But it doesn’t smell bad. Also this is happening to about half of my flock of 30 chickens… what can be causing this? Help?

Thanks

We can't tell you what's causing the gas. But when people have gas, it's often due to diet. Sugars and starches are famous for causing gas, so examine your chickens' diet. Try the enzyme I suggested for this thread and see if that helps. Giving a pill to chickens is not hard, but if you have to give pills to multiple chickens, it can turn into a drag. You might decide to add the enzyme to their feed instead.

Start your own thread on this topic and others will likely have more ideas.
