Very traumatized! Me, not the chicken.

We've trimmed spurs with a dremel tool and it works great. Cauterizes it at the same time and takes seconds. Maybe try that next time? (Or tell Keith and the step-daughter to while you're out chicken hugging).

We considered that, but was afraid the whine from the dremel tool would freak her out.

Red Rooster - yes SHE is still alive. There's a long story behind her name. I gave her electolytes and got her warm and she was fine.

It's just that I had never heard a chicken scream the way she did.

I would hate to hear a chick scream.

So sorry you guys had to go through that.

Poor you!
Poor Dragon!
I'm glad everything calmed down though!
Criminy!
I use pedi paw on my cross beak pullets beak.
She lays very still and lets me do what I have to do. I do a little on top and a little on the bottom because it heats up and I don't want to burn her.
Just go back and forth between the two.
I picked mine up at Meijer, but I've seen them cheap at walmart too.
They come with an extra head too, refills aren't too expensive either.
I have to trim my Penelope's beak, if I don't she can't eat.
I don't know if Dragon's beak is that severe.
Penelope was freaked out the first time I did it, but she noticed "Hey, I can eat better!"
So now she just stays still and waits until it's done.

I've used a dremmel tool too. the variable speed or the battery operated work great. The nice thing about a dremmel is that it takes a little at at time, not a big CHUNK, so it's easier to see what you're doing and you can also do some shaping. I used to do my bird's beak all the time. One holds the bird, the other holds the head and dremmels... keeping the eyes covered while holding the head helps to keep them calm. It's just a bit scary to them, but it is for their own good. My bird always acted immediatly like nothing happened.

I think we will wait a few days at least and take some more off using DH's dremel tool. We have a pedipaw too, never actually been used. The noise it makes freaks our older GSD out. It's much easier just to tell him we need to clip his nails, he gives us his paw and holds still while we trim them. Maybe we'll put it to use on Dragon's beak.

Thanks y'all.

I've heard you can use the same stuff they use to stop bleeding on dog's toenails when you cut the quick. I think its called quick stop or something..

Which is the same thing as what's in a styptic stick, if I'm not mistaken.

We later found out that a tiny piece of the beak was only nicked, not cut through. We think that's why it continued to bleed.
