My Precious Buff Orpington hen, Emerald, has had an impacted gizzard due to grass for about 2 weeks, starting the Sunday before Labor Day... She has been very lethargic, and she has been drinking water with Epsom salt (which I put in) frequently, so that's good. But I need to find a way to get her to eat! Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the grass unstuck and have her to eat? She needs to get some nutrients and protein from food! Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!! :hit
🥲

I would stop the Epsom Salts flush if she's been drinking that for more than a couple of days. Usually 1 time is all that's needed. The salts are very dehydrating.
Give her fresh plain water.

Is the gizzard impacted or the crop?
If the crop is not emptying, then follow the instructions in the article below. Provide her with wet feed, cooked egg, etc. to entice her.

@Wyorp Rock, Emerald has had an impacted gizzard from Thursday-Friday and today. Should I discontinue the Epsom Salt water? Do you think she is de-hydrated? If so I will give her fresh water. It is an impacted gizzard. Her crop is emptying and full as usual... I'm not sure if she's eating and if she is, is that's whats in her crop? Also, about 20 minutes after I posted the first post, she pooped out a sac of grass, which I'm pretty sure is good... do you have any ideas on how to get her to eat? She's gotten thinner and I'm not sure how long she'll last. I love her so much! Thank you so much for responding! 😊

Here are some pictures I just took of her:

Anyone please help! Emerald just threw up!!! It was clear with like a clear hint of lime green... I think my sister pushed her crop... is that normal?!! It also smelled bad like fart... IS it sour crop instead of impacted gizzard?!!😱
:eek::hit

Please. Get some photos of her poop.

Stop the epsom salts. Give her plain fresh water to drink. Don't force water on her, let her drink what she wants.

If you press on the crop when a hen has been eating/drinking, yes, you might push fluid back up. Don't do that anymore, she might choke.

She looks quite healthy and lovely in the photos. Are you sure she's impacted with anything?

Here's what I would do. Check her crop first thing in the morning when she wakes up. This should be after she's had a full night's sleep and before she's ate or drank anything.
Tell me what her crop feels like then.

When was her last egg?

@Wyorp Rock, thank you so much for replying! Yes, I stopped the Epsom salt and instead gave her fresh water. She has been drinking on her own.

Thank you she is such a beautiful Buff Orpington. I happened to take the photo when she was standing up and looking good.

She has definitly not been looking as good as she does in the photos. I'm positive that she is impacted.

I will check her crop in the morning. Her last egg was last week about Wednsday last week.

Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!😊
