We raised backyard birds for 10 years in AZ with no roosters so we broke every broody. Now we’re with our first flock in NC. 22 hens and 3 unexpected roosters. The hens are no more than a month difference in age (we got from three different sources and therefore ages). The oldest of them just started laying maybe 8 weeks ago and we already have a broody Barred Rock. Is it normal to have one go broody so early? We’re rolling the dice here and letting her sit on a clutch of four eggs.

Usually, broodiness happens more in the spring, then all summer long. I almost always have at least one broody, but these are silkies. As we speak, I have about 15 silkie hens and not ONE is broody. I'm shocked actually, but most do stop in the fall/winter.

I guess we can't say anything is for sure though, so good luck with yours and hopefully you'll have four chicks in about three weeks!

I’ve heard so many stories about silkies being a famously broody bunch. We took 5 birds as a dear friend was fighting cancer a few years ago. One of them was a bantam silkie and she was prone to being broody too.
