Vet refuses to put our dog down, suggestions?

It sounds like the assistant thinks she is the vet. I would insist on speaking to the vet directly (and be polite!), as much to express your concern about the assistant's behaviour as the need to euthanise the dog. She may well be driving his customers away.

Well, you (or a neighbor) can put her down. It's not easy, believe me, I've had to do that a few times bawling my fool head off, but sometimes it's best for the animal.

My Chi a pom was put down at 13yo last March. She was going blind but other than that she was healthy... Our fear was that she would go off the side of our staircase which is about 12 steps high and hurt herself because she couldn't find the floor or next step, and she thought the carpet was the grass(you can picture that one). Then our 9yo Sheltie died in October of kidney failure 2 days before we were to have her put out of her pain and misery. We have a great and caring vet and he sees each and every one of his patients. The only purpose of the assistant is to get info for him and do the weight, worm test sample etc... He knows we as a family take great care of our pets and he trusts our instincts on the care of them, so he agreed our Chi a pom needed to be in a happy place. Then there is a man that does the cremation for our vet and takes the ashes of all the pets for the week, says a small prayer and releases them on his 50 acre farm so their spirits can continue to run free. I wish you were able to have a vet like this... it would be much easier for you. What I don't understand is how the dog pounds can freely put down completely healthy pets without question but a family vet would refuse to do what the owner feels is best for their own pet... at least that pet was able to live a very fullfilled and happy life.

Well I called and talked to the vet directly, he said the assistant was wrong and he doesn't try to dictate our lives. I was so relieved I started crying right away. Thank you all for giving me the push I needed.

Here is a wonderful little poem that may make you feel better;

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
