Vet refuses to put our dog down, suggestions?

Where do you live!??! I have never met a vet that wouldn't put down a animal. I'm kinda happy to hear it, but at the same time it seems it is time for your poor dog. Call around. I know I have had vets tell me that it was a option for almost everything medically wrong... most recently my mother's dog has a ear problem and the surgery (which she is going to be getting next week) is very expensive so the vets (yes, three vets) all also offered euthanisation. Simply due to the cost of the surgery. All that is wrong with her is that she gets bacterial infections in her ear and medications don't work for her.

Making the decision to put down a much loved pet is a very hard choice to make. I am so sorry you and your family have had to go through so many hoops to carry out your decision. I think you made the right choice, once their hips go out it is just so hard for them to do anything not to mention the pain Betsy will be/is in.

For you, your family and Betsy.

Thanks everyone, it's so strange how I can be in such relief and such pain all at the same time.

Putting down a family pet is difficult enough without all of the drama that assistant put you through. You know what her mom went through and are trying to spare her some of that pain.
You are not the bad guy here. That assistant was way out of bounds and owes you and your family an apology for making a stressful experience worse.
In my lifetime I have tried to hang onto three beloved pets through surgeries and treatments and only extended their suffering. In the end, each time I realized that the dogs suffered, the vets profited and I let my animals down by not stepping up and doing the right thing.
Good for you for standing up and doing the right thing for your dog.

Well, it's finally over, she's gone. She will be missed by even my cat, who loves nothing more than to harrass the silly mutt. Thank you all for your well wishing, it's always nice to have kind words at times like these

Sorry for your loss. The day my dog, Leo, goes they'll have to put me to sleep and bury me with him. I adore that little beast.

So sorry... You did the right thing. You really did...
