Vining plants

I need something as well. My new run faces south and while that will be glorious in the winter, come summer, it will be a nightmare. I do have a lot of trees planted right across from the coop, but it will be several years before they are large enough to shade the coop. We are using a metal carport as a run so I know it is going to get very hot there. I want something to grow up the sides and onto the roof to help keep it cool. Grapes won't work as they would make a mess on the roof. On the north east corner I already have a Newport Fairy climbing rose planted and it will ramble up the roof, but I will need something less thorny across the front of the run.

I am thinking of something I can cut back so they get the winter sun so I might go with clematis. They won't be able to get to the vines to eat them so that isn't a concern. How about sweet potato vine for your coop?
