Hi there! I'm new to chickens and my girls are 2 weeks out from being 6 months old. Today my husband found this in the nesting box:

It was soft and didn't have a hard shell. I have read that when the girls first start laying, all sorts of weird phenomenon occur with the eggs. But what about blood in the shavings? (You can see the stains there in the photo.) Is it normal for the girls to bleed a little when they first start laying?

Isn't it cute??
I'm so excited.

Occasionally hens will lay and egg without a hard shell. If it was from an older hen then I would suggest giving her calcium/oyster shell, but since she is just starting to lay, it is most likely just a hiccup in her reproductive tract. Blood on occasion is also normal.
