What about Silkies in this area??? Eastern Shore Va or MD,southern Delaware, northeastern NC, or Norfolk area??? Chicks and/or chickens...hens and roo or st run ...just not all roos! Or ship w/o the 45.00 for older chickens fee.

have you ever shipped chickens? if they're not babies, it's not cheap... my 3 'free' cochins cost almost $90 to get here, counting cost of shipping boxes and postage.

Yes, I didn't mean that to sound like I didn't expect to pay postage! I always expect to pay for postage. I meant day old chicks so that stiff shipping fee wouldn't be there. I think the ones I ordered this past spring as day old chicks were maybe 16.00 for the box.The only way I would pay that much in shipping (45 to 90 to + $$$) is if I was showing or raising for show and/or I needed something special. I would like nice birds but not show quality. Pls don't get me wrong...I don't mind paying for nice birds and don't mind paying shipping for day olds but I would hate to put so much into shipping for chickens that will never see a show bench.
Soo...in other words, chickens or chicks not so far away that I can't drive to get them .If they need to be shipped then day old only as I don't want to pay the cost of 45+ dollars for bigger chickens to be shipped....besides...my husband would find out what I paid for postage and wring my neck totally!!!

Hi ESofVA. I had the same idea. I had seen so many scary stories of shipped chicks not doing well - and the shipping fees were 2-3x the cost of the birds themselves. I decided that I would search out some local breeders and attend some of the local swaps. That way I could put the 'shipping' expense into the purchase. I figured that I didn't mind driving - heck, I've been known to drive to Natural Bridge and back just because I NEEDED a break from the house (and roommate). So a couple hours to meet a fellow chicken lover and to pick up some chicks or young birds was no big deal.

I am now even more scared of doing that!! The man I bought chicks from locally bought them at an auction in Delaware. I didn't know that at the time. I ended up losing about a third of them due to respiratory infections. So then he bought me some Silkies for me when he went to PA. They have coccidiosis! I have lost 5 out of 8 in 4 days so far. They are bleeding out into their ceca. No deaths in 24 hrs I pray there are no more. Thank God they were isolated!!! Actually, the best ones I have gotten are from farm supply stores. A Purina and 2 SS. I know 1 of the SS got theirs from Ideal as I was there when the store owner brought them in...it is a small store. The next closest store for feed here is almost an hr away in MD, a TSC.
I am hoping that I can find someone on here that has more ethics than the people I have run into so far. I know he doesn't do that on purpose....but... and he went out of his way to find the Silkies for me.
I have the 3 left. I would like some more...I wanted to give my daughter who lives in western MD a trio. They are her favorite and they would be her first chickens since the ones she had for a while about 15 years ago.
I would drive farther, too...but hubby would have a hemorrhage. I drove from Blacksburg to Winchester for my dog.

Have you posted your question on the other state threads? or have you posted in the classified section? You may want to post a ISO ad there too. I'm not a silkie breeder, I just hatched some silky eggs under my silky broody because she wouldn't stop being broody. I got the cheapest silky eggs I could find on line - out of 9 eggs, 6 hatched.

I know what you mean about cost - my first clutch of silkies cost me around $60 for 24 shipped eggs, only 3 of the 24 hatched and then one died within 4 weeks of some unknown cause. That left me with 2 very expensive little silkies - a cockerel and pullet. They are beautiful and have been great chickens, but $30 a chick?

Is that what they are??? No, I'm afraid not. That is the only one I have (so far). Several years ago someone gave me a bunch of irises. Just the plain, single color, average light purple ones. They've been beautiful and prolific bloomers for years. Then a couple of years ago one bloomed yellow.

Last year there were several yellows - and this year the purple and white one popped up. Now it's just like Christmas when the paper covered buds appear... what color will they be this time??? LOL

well, for those who don't want to or can't incubate, I do offer hatching services. for local or shipped eggs.

I live between christiansburg and roanoke, so attend both swaps most months (tho i'll be missing c'burg this month and next because of previous obligations).
