The next swap in SW virginia is the Roanoke one (at TSC), also on October 20, starting around 8am.

there's usually an older gentleman who will buy up all LF roosters for $5 each, so it's a good way to part with those extra birds you don't want to keep feeding.

The next swap after that will be in Rocky Mount (also at TSC), on October 27th.

I plan to be at the Roanoke swap with some bantam cochins - self blue (aka lavender) and splits, plus a couple blue red columbian cockerels.

pics of the black/self blues and the one self blue adult girl, I also have 2 chicks growing out i'll be bringing.

I've been busy trying to discourage broodies from sitting lol! Getting ready for winter and keeping hawk attacks to a minimum (lost one silkie mix chick). Sandy caused my netting posts to lean but it stayed up - so I still have that to fix. I have (4) one week old silkie chicks that my broody is busy teaching how to scratch for food.

well, we lost 1 tree from Sandy, and a *something* got my only blue cochin pullet i picked up at the show in OH last month. so i sold off the roo and everyone else i had to go at the last swap. down to just my adult (or nearing adult) birds left that i'm keeping, and the couple dozen chicks hatched out over the last 4 weeks. 8) lots of mille fleur bantam cochins, a few dorkings, and some silver laced bantam cochins plus a few extras (1 buff barred, 1 partridge, 1 red, 1 ?? waiting to feather out to ID). more eggs in the incubator, mixture of guinea and chicken for a customer and some more bantam cochins of my own. one of my blue partridge girls was bred by my bantam blrw (several times), so i'll see what we get. so far everything hatched has been pure cochin.

the oldest group (hatched oct 5) are ready to go out to a heated coop and the next youngest (oct 18 hatch) are almost ready too, so i'm waiting to put them all out at once.

Sorry to hear about your blue cochin pullet! That sucks.

Silver laced bantam cochins... mmm... that sounds pretty. Can't wait to hear what you get from the BLRW, blue partridge cross. Those should be interesting! :)

It does get boring when there's no hatching or broodies going on. I am building a new duplex coop for my barred rocks and columbian rocks I hope to have finished by the end of the year. With my current coops. That makes 7 breeds I'm raising as of now. Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires, Delawares, Barred Rocks, Columbian Rocks, Bantam Barred Rocks, and Bantam Buff Brahma's. My wife says I'm nuts and I'm beginning to think I might be. I've currently got 6 coops, not including the 2 I'm working on. 4 portable coops I use mainly for broody hens and incubator chicks. Anybody think I'm going over board?
