CMLR, welcome to BYC. sorry, can't help out with the chick thing... read back a bit you'll see i'm a bit covered up. (soon to be buried under fluffybutts!)

Sorry Lori, no can do... see above comment LOL

barnyardmommy, I've got LOTS of hatching eggs (again read previous posts) but i'm not anywhere near you i don't think... unless you plan a trip to roanoke soon.

on another note... i think i've identified my darkest brown eggs as blrw eggs... soon to test that theory, probably on tuesday or wed i'll set a bunch of the *PURE!* dorking eggs from my red pen (pysankigirl, YES, most are from my dilute girl!!! today was the first day to get 3 eggs from 6 girls!) as well as these possible blrw eggs, and some more EE's... only had 4 hatch this batch (the 5th was the crooked baby who is no more)...

i'm going to have to figure out some way to subdivide my hatcher, or set up a second one... i can't tell the ee's from the dorks very easily, it seems. the blrw cross chicks are easy. rose combs. dork crosses have 5 toes. so we'll see what they end up as. if they're blonde, then they're orp eggs not dotte eggs. either way too dark to be dorking eggs (off white to lightly tinted).

oh. just remembered, i set 18 blue/green eggs in that bunch of 60 (due the 15th). repeat same concern for telling who's who. LOL with that many due at once,i may just have to fire up the 4th 'bator for hatching. at least then i can put all my dorking-ish eggs in one, the ee and blrw in the other.

keep this up i'm gonna have chicks coming out my ears! but the swaps all start soon, so i just have to remember to sell, sell, sell em all.

except the ones who won't be for sale that is.

can you tell i have a 'thing' for chipmunk stripes? 8) even the blondies in the left feed pan have faint stripes...

think a couple of the little'uns might be bantam ee's... nothing else i can think of that comes in 'chipmunk' pattern has dark legs.

I haven't had to do this yet, because I have only set Barnevelders up until now, but I have heard that you can get plastic "baskets" at the dollar store and put them over the eggs you want to keep separate. personally, if I ever need to I would be upset about not being able to see the eggs, so I would want something I could see through on top. the other thing I've heard people using is that plastic mesh they sell at the craft store for doing stitches on with yarn? and connecting them into a box.

Those eggs I got from Craig are less than a week from hatching....so far have only pulled 9, which is great seeing that he was collecting them in below freezing temperatures. 8 were clear and one bloodring. they were fairly dirty in my opinion and I had to do alot of work with a q-tip and warm water before I was willing to put them in my 'bator so I actually expected more bloodrings than that.

cool that your dilute girl is laying!!! cant wait to see what she produces. she is in with a red Roo?

who KNOWS what I have gotten from Craig. I think even he is curious as to what they will look like. Honestly, I am not too hung up on color. I am coming at this from doing reenacting, Jamestown period. way before there were rules on color. I hope that doesn't make me a bad person, but for instance these girls Craig brought me from Sandhill....they have spangled breasts!!! kinda cool looking but I don't know of any dorking coloration that is supposed to have spangled breasts! very interesting though.

oh gosh...so sorry to go on.

I use a dishwasher basket (found in the baby section) to separate my eggs of different breeds in the hatcher. Works great and I can still see through the top. Just be sure to measure how much height you have to work with inside your 'bator - I suggest measuring from the floor to the heat element (in the cheaper style bators) before getting something. I just happened to have some left over from when my littles were littler.

OMG Karen they are adorable. When I had Partridge Pennies the chicks looked identical

Quote: actually, i've got plenty of hardware cloth, think i'm just going to use that... it can be nearly on the heat element, worst it'll do is spread some more heat thru the incubator. the thermostat will still cut off at the right time. i need to get some of those plastic egg flats i can cut up for setting eggs. i'm getting tired of throwing away the paper mache ones when they get dirty. - and yes, i set my eggs upright for hatching. keeps the chicks from rolling eggs all over, which i've found disorients the other hatching chicks and i end up with more dead in shell that had already started to hatch but failed.

Those chicks are TOO CUTE!

I don't see HOW yall can manage to get anything else done with all those babies around. When I had my 6 little ones last spring, I kept catching myself having spent an hour just standing there watching them.. LOL

So I am a in town chicken owner with 6 ft fences.
However one of my silly chickens got into the neighbors yard (luckily good friends) The husband video taped the wife chasing the silly chicken while he laughed hysterically. Good thing they got us to help before we left for the store or the chicken would have spent the night in their yard!! He laughed even harder when I got to the back yard and said "silly chicken get over here" and she came running for me to pick up!

I just checked everyone's wings the day prior hmmmmmmm....

ki4got,

at these swaps, is it still the law to purchase 6 chicks at once? If not, you'll probably see me at Tractor Supply! We need two more chickies!
yes it's state law, but i think only for retailers? private sales are... well private.

besides, these won't be day old chicks, which is what i think the state law is regarding... by the time the swap comes around they'll be a considerably bit bigger than they are now.
