Virginia

My last hatchery order came in Feb. I brooded them outside in a rabbit hutch from the start and they were perfectly fine under their 100w bulb. They feathered out VERY quickly in the cool temps. Since then, I don't brood in the house anymore. Anyway, keep a thermometer under the heat lamp, as long as they have that small spot to warm themselves, don't worry about what the temperature is in the rest of the brooder :)

It wasn't my original intentions to have to raise chicks in the fall, I usually get them in the early spring, but things just didn't work out the way I had intended them on so, I'm just dealing with what I have been handed, in hopes of having a few more eggs this spring.
Thanks for the input. The outside brooder is in one of my enclosed sheds, so it's protected from the wind, and rain, and such. The inside temp has been staying right about where it should be after a few minor adjustments. They'll spend their first few days, or week or two inside, in my den, then they are headed outside.

I'm planning on driving to the poultry swap in Glen Allen this Saturday. I'm bringing a few chickens to sell and my DH wanted to bring a few plants to sell from his nursery. Can he do this or is it strictly chickens?

yeah another nursery was there in spring with a bunch of plants and trees... pretty much anything goes if it can be found on a farm LOL
