ok who wants some broodiness? 8) first time momma, I gave her 5 babies day before yesterday, hatched the day/night before. mixed breed including some assortment of EE Dorking and BLRW, plus one cochin/??.

yesterday she stayed on the nest all day, but I took food in to the babies since they'd already learned to eat/drink before taking them out of the brooder. this morning I took food in again. not sure who ate it all both times, since she's free ranging 100%. first morning I was worried the other chickens would have issues with the babies but the little ones were wandering around her nest, everyone else just ignored them.

today she took them for a walk for the first time. before bed I gave them some FF to fill up on for the night, and made her move off the babies so they would see the food. then, since the trailer is a step up, I gathered all 5 babies (momma just watched) and put them in the trailer, picked her up and put her in with them, she talked to them all the way back to her nest box. until they can jump i'll just keep helping if she and they will let me.

if you're wondering, she's a good example of a Colored Dorking... took best of breed in Knoxville back in December. 8)

That's a heart warmer!

Chicks have arrived in Spotsylvania!

Hi All, I am a recently new (this summer) white Indian runner ducks and Sebastopol geese owner in the Richmond area. My husband wants to get sebrights in the future.

Any other people around the Richmond area? What swaps do you all recommend for adding waterfowl to the mix? I know there is a big VA Poultry Fest in Nov, that we unfortunately missed this year. Any others we should put on the calendar?

Gilmanor is twice a year. first Saturday in may, third Saturday in September.

it's at Gilman Farm & Feed on Chewning Rd in Glen Allen. someday i'll remember the box # but you can google it easy enough. every time we get there earlier and still haven't been the first ones in! LOL

Maybe Leigh can remember... but I think we got there about 5:30 the last time to set up for selling. gates open to the public officially at 8 tho I know I was selling before that. LOL

got even more birds planned to go this year than last! SFH, ee mixes, cochin mixes, possibly some Wyandottes (blue laced reds) depending on what hatches next week (

and possibly dorkings and pure bantam cochins, but again depends on who lays and what hatches.

LOL - Karen you've got to come the night before if you want to get there first!

There's always been waterfowl at Gilman's the times I've gone... from great big geese on down.

I'm newer to BYC, I joined in January. I just got my first chickens this past weekend and I'll be getting my first chicks this weekened. I'm located in the Northern Virginia area (Prince William County) anyone near by?

I am up in northern Loudoun County near Lovettsville. Welcome to BYC & the Virginia thread!

Here's a question. After every comment some people have information about what birds they are working with or personal stuff; ie family etc. Where do I put that information about myself?
