Virginia

and I've heard of Pet Chickens of Virginia, but don't know much about them, sorry. I already spend way too much time on here. :/

Pet Chickens of VA post the swaps they run at many of the Tractor Supply Cos throughout Spring and Summer on their site. The forum isn't actually real active as far as discussions go, but it's a good source for an updated breeder directory and list of swaps.

Fairly close. About 10 minutes from there.

We're going to be building a coop with wood pallets. So much cheaper than buying a coop since we'd need so much space..and the larger premade ones are EXPENSIVE.

Found out today my Brother in law should be able to save up enough pallets for us in about 2 weeks time. Will give us plenty of time to build it. :)

We live north of town off of 29

I am hoping to hatch some eggs under 2 broodies currently and more later. helps so much when incorporating them into the flock...they won't get picked on if Momma is doing her job. (not so much of an issue when you are just starting out) chicken politics are amusing sometimes but sometimes just annoying.

I'm from the C'ville area. I'm about to get 25 chicks from McMurray. I'm already discouraged enough from people who tell me that McMurray's quality has gone down, blah blah blah. So please don't repeat it. @ki4got , do you have to join that poultry club to show?

Caroline,

No you do not need to join the Virginia Poultry Breeders Association (VPBA) to show your chickens. It is an open show and anyone who pays the fees can show their birds. I did my first ever show last November with VPBA and had a great time. They are freindly folks that are happy for folks to show their chickens. They also did a really nice job in the setup and management of the show.

no, but it does help support the annual show(s) by joining...

and sorry to say, if you want to show you won't find it at a hatchery... that's just been fact for years.

if you want to show, what breeds are you looking for?
