Oooohh! Tell me about the Virginia chicken! I don't have any of those yet... (I know ,

Just kidding, on clubs - let's see... well there's us right here! But we're kind of loose knit, and I'm not very tightly wrapped. So, don't know if that helps very much. There are individual breed clubs (APA Standards) for various type of chickens, and I've heard of Pet Chickens of Virginia, but don't know much about them, sorry. I already spend way too much time on here.

talking about the weather im ready for spring myself. on the clubs I wasn't looking for breed specific just looking for one different ones in a certain area get together talk about chickens and their coops etc.

Virginia chicken? I wonder what kind of chickens TJ raised...

oops...

I think it's HILARIOUS...people around here call Thomans Jeffeerson "TJ" like they knew him or something..."TJ wouldn't have wanted a bypass....TJ wouldn't have wanted us to change anything...TJ would want everything to stay excactly the way it is..."

Thomas Jefferson was an innovator. I think he would have embrased many of the things that people say he would have hated.

the only Virginia club I know of is the VPBA Virginia poultry breeders association... you can Google them but the website isn't updated often. they have at least one show a year, maybe two, and I think they have a club gathering maybe once a year...

the other 'gathering' that is a Virginia MUST is Gilmanor. the largest swap in the state, held twice a year.

Gilmanor is the first Saturday of every May and the third Saturday every September.

address: Gilman Farm & Feed, 12187 Chewning Rd, Glen Allen, VA

opens at 8am, setup begins at 6am (many of us get there earlier LOL)

If you're selling, spaces are $10 each

Just popping in to say hello. New member, and new to chickens (been researching for a long time though-so much info out there)! We are getting our first chicks here in a few weeks. :) Great to see so many other Virginians around!

Hello Tappy4me! Welcome to the VA thread!

That Rambler coop could work for 6-8 LF hens if they had other areas to go to. In other words they'd go to it to lay and go in to roost at night. They would need a run, with more cover to get out of the rain, and to spread out during the day. If they had to stay in it all day it's ok for about two. Any more than that and you're going to have problems.

Having 6 nest boxes is deceptive, If it served as home base for 12 hens, they still probably only use one maybe two nest boxes max. Chickens are funny that way.

Thanks for the info! Yea, we plan to have them free ranging during the day. Just up in the coop at night! Regardless, found another design that is very feasible for us.

The jjamerbs pallet palace. There is a roofing supply place up the road that gives away free pallets...plus my brother in law works for a construction supply store and has access to them as well. :)

I'm from the C'ville area. I'm about to get 25 chicks from McMurray. I'm already discouraged enough from people who tell me that McMurray's quality has gone down, blah blah blah. So please don't repeat it. @ki4got , do you have to join that poultry club to show?

Me too! (the Cville part, not the mcMurray part.) What kind of chicks are you getting? Honestly the great thing about hatcheries is you can buy just females. nothing wrong with that if you really don't want to deal with the problem I have of way too many males and I got foolishly attached to.them.
