Virginia

I have been overprotective of the flock, and too cheap to pay the free-range tax this Winter, lol!! Will give it a shot after fencing out the neighbors chickens. They wander over every now and then and I don't want to host Neighborhood Rooster Smackdown 2015.

BTW is anyone near RVA interested in waterfowl this Spring? I'm getting Welsh Harlequins, Muscovy, Sebastopol, and Buff shipped and will have more than I need.

I see Poultry Anonymous in my future....

the free-range tax????

By "free-range tax" I mean having a chicken killed by hawk/fox/dog/etc. as a result of free ranging.

Hello to everyone on board.
Read a few lines about rabbits. We have had them off and on over the years. None currently but have considered BUT reconsidered and NO WAY. I have enough to take care of.

IMPORTANT, I would think rehomed rabbits would experience some type of need for adjusting to their new surroundings. They are not toys nor dolls for easter fun nor for playing dress up with an easter bonnet. That would be kids play. If there were bunnies for sale and immediately not for sale due to loss such as the mother killing her babies, which I have never heard of, I first would wonder how much handling the mother and baby received and how threatened they may have felt? What in the world would cause a mother rabbit to kill her baby? Never heard a rabbit doing it. I have heard of pandas, etc... doing it BUT not a domesticated rabbit. Some type of trauma? Well I wonder how this chicken thread went into rabbits?

I checked on the Virginia Chicken thread Where are you? Where am I? To see what has been interesting lately since I can not sleep tonight. Sorry to hear that ANYONE lost their newly aquired pet bunny rabbits. There are very experienced people on the backyard barnyard thread specifically for Bunny rabbits maybe they can help.

Sometimes first mothers get it wrong...this poor guy was deformed and possibly born early. I was not there upon her birth as I wasn't expecting anything until mid February!! But now she's inside so I can monitor her. It could have been DOA.. it could have died after birth. It appeared to be a stuck kit. She's a very nice rabbit and let's me pet her all the time. She's a cute little model. She could have overgromed him too. Lots of times first time mothers kill their babies...they trample them..eat them...nest after birth therefore digging where babies are. Look it up. :)
I have been getting her settled in and she loves to be put of her cage...I'm sorry you don't like me putting little hats and headbands on her. . but she's uses to it and doesn't mind a bit. Yes I know she's not a toy. She's a living thing. I feed water her. Give her herbs and treats. Let her out of her cage to get exercise. Make sure her water and feed is cleans and unfrozen. She has hay to eat- its fine to photograph with props. She's not a doll and I don't pose her.. I let her sit how she's comfortable. I don't leave then on hwe for long. I get a couple pictures and take the hats off. She's a great rabbit and I love her! Hopefully her next litter is more sussecful.

I don't think the mother killed that bunny from the looks of it. It looks deformed or pre-mature. And sorry, but I don't see how this thread is a 'chicken' thread. I know that most people on here raise chickens, not rabbits, but last time I checked this was a 'Virginia' thread. For any discussion.
