Virginia

Hello! I am currently in Staunton, VA. Moving to Nelson County next month. I am looking for hatching eggs! Can't wait to get my flock going again! I am interested in Araucana's, Cukoo Marans, Light Sussex, Rhode Island Reds mainly. If you will have any towards mid/late January please get in touch especially if you are within driving distance!

I got my first egg today!!! Sigh twirl happy dance!!!
No idea who laid it but I think it might be my New Hampshire/mutt named Henry

My oldest daughter and I jumped up and down for this small perfect little egg!!!

what is a egg song and how do I hear it??

The egg song is the call the hens give as they leave the nest after laying. Some times the other hens will pick it up and sing too, and it sounds like a big ol' chicken party!

Typically goes something like buck buck buckock! abuck buck buckock! abuck buck buckock! Even the roosters will join in sometimes...

There are lots of variations, but that gives you an idea.

My pullets start singing about a week before they lay their first egg... It's always a welcome sound!

... egg song starts at 36 seconds in... enjoy!

Room to rent Dinwiddie, Va:
Small mixed flock of large-fowl, not-quite-a-year-old hens seeking roommate(s). Would prefer an older large fowl female - attitude is a PLUS. Breed is not important but colorful eggs would be huge bonus. Our landlord (roo) is being rather tough on us girls and we'd like to welcome an older, experienced hen who just might teach him a few manners. We have a nice 8x8 coop with a large perch, 2 private next boxes (more can be added if required) and a 30x30 run with a nice dust bath and a shady bush to nap under. Our person visits every day and sits with us while we get a snack of scratch and yummy kitchen scraps.
If interested, please respond to this ad.

maggiesdad,
My husband came upstairs today and said "there is something wrong with the chickens, something is bothering them!!" We open the door to the deck and hear the egg song and we caught "Henry" in the act just coming out of the coop and now know who is laying the eggs!
